I have problems finding how relevant are those patents, I'm kind of worried by segwit and the fact that NASDAQ owns Coinbase and indirectly owns blockstream. I've heard how they are a bother to proprietary blockchains for profit if they don't have defensive patents. It doesn't affect the core of the space.
No "side" is perfect, and the traditional systems (including patents) make this hard to figure out. These are more reasons why we want everyone decentralized and open source.
