Sergeant Roger Mortog (Dany Glover), a Los Angeles County police homicide detective looking worried about age after celebrating his 50th birthday, received a letter from his old friend in the Vietnam War, Michael Hansaker (Tom Atkins), who realized that he had not met him for more than a year. 12 years. الرقيب روجر مورتوغ (داني غلوفر) محقق جرائم القتل في قسم شرطة لوس أنجلوس والذي بدا قلقا من تقدمه في العمر بعد احتفاله بعيد ميلاده الخمسون، تلقي رسالة من صديقه القديم في حرب فيتنام مايكل هانساكر (توم اتكنس) والذي أدرك أنه لم يقابله منذ أكثر من 12 سنة. وقبل مقابلته لصديقيه تم استعائه للتحقيق في حادثة انتحار تبين أن الضحية فيها هي أماندا ابنة صديقه هنساكر. ومن جهة أخرى الرقيب مارتن ريجز (ميل جيبسون) المحقق من قسم المخدرات في قسم شرطة لوس أنجلوس والذي أصبح ذو ميول إنتحارية بعد وفاة زوجته في حادث مروري، كاد أن يقتل مشتبهاً به غير مسلح في حملة مداهمة لوكر مخدرات، قلقاً من سلوكه قرر رؤساء ريجز نقله لقسم جرائم القتل ليصبح هو ومورتوغ شريكين متنافرين. بعد تشريح جثة أماندا إتضح أنها تناولت مخدر مخلوط بمنظف بالوعات والذي كان هو سبب الوفاة مما جعل القضية تتحول إلى قضية قتل بدلا عن الإنتحار. والد اماندا المهتاج إدعي أنه حاول الاتصال بمورتوغ لمساعدته في انتشالها من العالم السفلي للمخدرات، الدعارة وتصوير الأفلام الإباحية. بدأ مورتوغ وريجز تحقيقاتهم بالوصول إلى القواد الذي كانت اماندا مرتبطة به والذي قادهم بدوره إلى معمل للمخدرات والي العاهرة ديكسي المشتبه في أنها قامت بتسميم اماندا، وعند وصولهم إلى منزل ديكسي انفجر المنزل قبل دخولهم، وبفحص بقايا المتفجرات والتي قادتهم إلى المشتبه به هنساكر الذي اعترف بتورطه في تهريب الهيروين قبل سنتين، وتتوالي الأحداث لتقودهم إلى شبكة اجرامية منظمة يقودها عسكريون سابقون مع توالي الأحداث وفي نهاية الفيلم تتوطد العلاقة بين ريجز ومورتاغ.
