"Ready Player One"... geek power!

in #movie-review6 years ago

In recent years, nerds have moved from being considered just "looser" to being considered really cool, almost fashionable.
This is also demonstrated by the films that are being released in cinemas.
One of these, "Ready Player One", it's the latest masterpiece by Steven Spielberg and it's a really geek movie...but also if you are not geek, you're gonna love it too!

Wade is the main character and he is one of the many players of OASIS, an immense virtual world created by James Halliday, whose brilliant mind has revolutionized human life, which is now experienced mainly in a virtual way through an avatar. Halliday, played by Mark Rylance, before dying, has hidden three keys in the game, which can be obtained by three challenges, and the hunt for these hidden treasures is the focus of the film: whoever can find them, in fact, will become the new owner of OASIS.
But OBVIOUSLY Wade is not the only one who wants to win....

Personally, I expected a lot from this movie and it did not disappoint me at all, indeed! The duration of 2 hours and 20 slips completely off without feeling any heaviness. The story is rather classic but, thanks to a very successful script, it results very attractive.
But, what prompted me to go and see this film and that I was curious to see were the Easter eggs, an incredible amount of character and references to geek films, comics, games and pop culture.
In fact, there are full of cameo appearances...

In the mass scenes we can see Tracer from Overwatch, Chun Li from Street Fighter, but also Joker, Harley Quinn, the Iron Giant (sooo much melancholy!!! ), Lara Croft, the Ninja Turtles and also famous car such as the Batmobile or the timeless DeLorean from "Back to the Future"... And ao much more!
But I'm not going to give you more spoilers... I really recommend you to see it, you will not be disappointed, exspecially if you are nerds like me :P

At the end, it actually sends out an unexpected message: it's a great hobby to play video games and it can also be your job, but remember that there's a real life outside that deserves to be lived, and that nothing can replace human contact.

Spielberg nailed it, again.
