Poetic Film Review: Greed (1924)
In the golden age of Hollywood's past,
Erich von Stroheim's vision was vast.
With Greed in 1924, he aimed to show,
The dark side of greed, the seeds it sow.
Based on Norris' novel, a tale so grim,
Of McTeague's descent, his prospects dim.
From miner to dentist, his fate would twist,
As greed and jealousy in his life persist.
Stroheim's commitment to realism extreme,
Led to a masterpiece, a filmmaker's dream.
But the studio's demands for a shorter cut,
Left Stroheim's vision somewhat shut.
Despite the setbacks, Greed still shines,
Among critics and scholars, its legacy defines.
A cautionary tale of greed and its cost,
In the annals of cinema, forever embossed.
So take a seat, and watch with care,
As Stroheim's masterpiece fills the air.
For in the darkness of silent film's embrace,
Lust for Gold still holds its place.
