Bad Boys (film) : before Smith was HUGE and kind of near the end of Lawrence

in #movies6 years ago

Marin Lawrence never really took off like Will Smith did. This might have been because Martin is not traditionally good-looking and had to rely mostly on his comic appeal and he also wasn't as believable as an action hero since he is quite short (sorry Martin.) It was a pretty interesting crossroads for these two stars though and Bad Boys is a wildly entertaining film that I enjoyed immensely.

Was Michael Bay already a well-known action-film director in 1995? I honestly don't know because I was not paying attention to director names at that point in my life. I think the main thing that was going on was that Will Smith and Martin Lawrence were transitioning out of sitcoms and moving onto the silver screen and everyone wanted to see them work together. That was my reasoning anyway.

The movie goes like this Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) are a couple of cops who are investigating a bunch of confiscated drugs that have gone missing and the police force suspects it was an inside job. They have a limited amount of time in order to figure out whodunnit or the Feds are going to take over and shut down their precinct. It is a pretty typical plotline for cop movies.

They also need an attractive lady to be involved in the storyline so in comes Julie Mott (Téa Leoni) who is a witness to the crime but will only speak to Mike Lowry for some trust reason. Hilarity ensues when Marin Lawrence needs to pretend that he IS Mike Lowry - when MIke is well-known for being a playboy when he, Marcus, is a dedicated family man.

The action is good, the pacing is good, the casting was done well and the comedy isn't the entire film - it is actually a small part of it and according to lore much of the comedic stuff in the film was ad libbed because the script was considered quite dry and boring by Michael Bay. Bay asked Lawrence and Smith to help spice it up a bit and much of the comedy wasn't in the screenplay at all.

this is how the "freeze! mother bitches!" line came to be... but in today's SJW world that would probably be too anti-non-native-English-speaker or some other nonsense

I would say if you are my age there isn't much chance you haven't already seen this film but if you are younger than I am you should have a look at what Will Smith's early film career looked like.

I am a sucker for mindless action films and therefore really like this movie and other ones similar to it. There is nothing particularly ground-breaking about anything that happens in this film and Michael Bay caught some flak from critics for using superfluous explosions rather than having a real story... a system that has pretty much defined his career over the past 23 years and made him super-duper rich.

This and the sequel are great, yet stupid action movies. I have a Blu-ray set of them. He followed this up with the awesome movie "The Rock".

I love the scene you referenced:

"Now back up, put the gun down, and get me a pack of tropical fruit Bubbalicious."

"And some Skittles!"

This gotta be among my first 'badass' movies to fall in love with. The idea of watching two black men executing their lead roles in such a manner was appealing to my teenage self.

Martin Lawrence didn't manage to glow like Will Smith did first because Will was more. First because he had done so well on the 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' which debut 1990. Then after 'Bad Boys' in 95, he dropped his first 'solo' album in 97 dubbed 'Men in Black'. It had my all time favourite from him 'Gettin Jiggy with It' which was a hit in 98.

And as Will shone and keeps shining all this time, Lawrence was/is dealing with major bipolar disorders.

We need more mindless action films + more popcorn and chocolate!

I remember liking this movie. Yeah, I think your assessment of their careers is pretty accurate.

There is an attorney office right next to my doctor's office called Mark Lowery, Attorney at Law. Every time I walk by it I always start saying "Mark Lowery" in that sarcastic voice that Martin does when he says "Mike Lowrey" in the movie. My wife is like "OMG every single time, Ricky..."

MIke Lowww-err-reeee. haha, yeah, i remember that. Impossible not to.

Fantastic movie
Good mix of action and comedy and soundtrack and background score was superb

This high-action crime drama stands out for me because it succeeds at doing what other movies* have tried and, in my opinion, failed to do -- integrate genuinely funny comedy into the mix. The success is attributable partly to the comedic talents of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence -- who have the ability to deliver crude, rude dialog such that it's funny nevertheless -- and partly to a story that combines suspense and humor into a believable whole.

@gooddream Will Smith is one of my fav actors in bollywood and this movie is one of the top reason for that. The first film I saw of him was the independance day and as a sci-fi lover I very much enjoyed the film back then.
What i like most about the man is his weird style of talking which i find very charming and interesting. The way he mess with his partner Martin all of the time in Bad Boys is hilarious. Also, his partner's sister is her gf and martin is very no no about it. But as the movie rolls and they kick the badass gansgsters together and give us a happy ending, its good enough to spend your 2 hours and watch the movie.

keep it going mate.

I want more of will smith!
