Did the Mario Galaxy Movie Bite Off More Stars Than It Could Chew?

Alright, Super Mario fanatics and movie buffs, the moment we’ve all been dreaming about (and theorizing endlessly on Reddit) is finally here! The highly anticipated sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, taking us straight into the breathtaking cosmos of Super Mario Galaxy, has landed! I just got back from the premiere, and let me tell you, my mind is still orbiting somewhere near the Comet Observatory.

First things first: visually, this movie is an absolute STAR. If you thought the Mushroom Kingdom looked vibrant, wait until you see the shimmering galaxies, the swirling Star Bits, and the incredible gravity-defying acrobatics on the big screen. The animation team deserves all the power-ups for bringing the Galaxy aesthetic to life with such stunning detail. Seriously, it's a feast for your eyeballs!

And the music? Oh man, the music! It’s soaring, it’s epic, it perfectly captures that feeling of wonder and adventure that the games are famous for. Hearing those iconic Galaxy themes in a cinematic orchestral arrangement sent shivers down my spine – the good kind!

Our favorite plumbing duo, Mario (Chris Pratt) and Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), are back in action, and they slide right back into their roles like it’s second nature. But the real MVPs in the voice cast for me were the newcomers. Rosalina and the Lumas steal every scene they're in. Rosalina is exactly as majestic and mysterious as you'd hope, and the Lumas? Prepare for your heart to melt into a puddle of goo. They are the cutest cosmic companions ever!

The movie really leans into its source material, cramming in pretty much everything you love about Super Mario Galaxy. You’ve got the Star Bits, the launch stars, the various gravity mechanics, the different planetoids, and of course, the grand, overarching story of Rosalina and the Lumas. It’s incredibly faithful, which is awesome for hardcore fans.

BUT (and you knew there was a "but," didn't you?). While "faithful" is great, sometimes too much of a good thing can, well, be too much. This movie feels like it tried to gobble up every single idea, character, and power-up from both Galaxy games and stuff them into one two-hour-ish package. It's like going to a buffet and trying to eat one of everything – you end up full, a little overwhelmed, and maybe wishing you’d just focused on a few perfect dishes.

The pacing can feel a bit like a hyperspace jump with too many stops along the way. Just when you're getting comfortable with one incredible new world or character, BAM! You're introduced to another, and then another, and then a new gameplay mechanic, and suddenly you're juggling more plot threads than Mario has hats. It left me wondering if maybe, just maybe, this cosmic adventure could have been split into two movies to give all these amazing elements the breathing room they deserved.

Despite being a little "overstuffed" (like a giant, delicious but slightly overwhelming space burrito), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still a joyous, visually spectacular ride that any Mario fan will absolutely adore. It’s got heart, humor, and enough nostalgia to power a thousand warp pipes. It might stumble a tiny bit trying to carry all its cosmic cargo, but it still delivers a fun, albeit whirlwind, adventure. And trust me, it definitely sets up some exciting possibilities for future Nintendo movie magic – I’m looking at you, Luigi’s Mansion and Odyssey!

So grab your popcorn, prepare for a visual treat, and try not to get too dizzy with all the rapid-fire galaxy hopping!
