Moonstruck: interesting rom comsteemCreated with Sketch.

Cher definitely left her mark on the music world. Sadly, she couldn't (wouldn't)? leave it on the movie world, despite this Oscar-worthy performance.

Loretta is of Italian descent and lives again with her parents (she's a widow). He gets engaged with a long-term acquaintance who must first travel to Italy to see his terminal mother. While there, he asks her to contact his estranged brother so he comes to the wedding...

I don't know what the competition was for that year, but both Cher and Olympia Dukakis (the mother) gave excellent performances. Cher's accent seems accurate, and we can see her struggles both to take a hold of her own life and find true love without the bad luck. Dukakis is an excellent Mama, showing that ultimately SHE wears the pants.

As for Nicholas Cage, the role was tailor-made for him - a bitter, maimed man who hates life but finds "redemption." At first, he just acts on impulse but realizes that there is more to life than mere physical pleasures.

Finally, for once, NYC didn't look like the dump it is usually portrayed as in 80s movies. And as the title implies, the moon "plays" a role, which I think was original.

In short, Moonstruck is worth a watch. Cher gives an excellent performance and actually takes an active role (unlike many romcoms), the supporting cast plays their role very well and the movie is still relevant nearly 40 years later.
