SC-S28/W2-Movie Highlights|Based on True Events(93 days)

Greetings beautiful people and welcome to my blog. I love good movies even though I am not that big on movies but when it comes to movies on true life stories, count me in. This is because these movies actually brings us face to face with the realities of what happened, the actual struggles and the pains these humans like us passed through.

Sometimes it can be very heart breaking and some of them even depressing when you see the things that your fellow humans went through. So today I would be sharing one of those touching movies but this time around one that touched not just an individual but a whole nation and that’s my country Nigeria and the name of the movie is 93 days.

Did the movie make you more curious about the real-life story?

Did you hear of the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria on 23rd of July 2014 which was declared officially over by the World Health Organization on October 20th 2014? The battle against this deadly disease lasted for 93 days and that’s where this movie gets its name from.

Well, not just the movie making me curious cos I had a first hand witness of the panick and tension this threw all of us into in the country so the movie more like opened my eyes more to what happened behind the scenes and in the high places where we didn’t know what transpired but I was a witness of the whole panick and wouldn’t wish that again for my beloved country.

So seeing this movie made me curious on digging deep more about the stories that actually surrounded the Ebola outbreak. Before I watched this movie, I knew the basic outline that Patrick Sawyer was the one that brought Ebola into Lagos and that Dr. Stella Adadevoh stopped him from escaping and then at the end Nigeria was able to contain the outbreak. The movie made me want to dig deeper into the sacrifices made by these medical personnel’s just to combat the outbreak.

Watching Bimbo Akintola, who played Dr. Stella Adadevoh Very well made me want to get to know her more and her medical background seeing the kind of courage she had to pull through by retaining Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey who portray Patrick Sawyer seeing the mixture of desperation and aggression he displayed and opened my eyes to the kind of pressure she and the hospital was really under.

Which scene or moment felt the most powerful or emotional?

One of the most intense scene was when Dr Bimbo confronted Patrick Sawyer when he demanded to be released from the hospital. She stood in front of the door and wouldn’t let him pass and then he screamed and tried to push pass her. The atmosphere was really tense as the medical staff were all shocked and the Dr’s voice was shaking but did not break.

Knowing that this really happened was a very emotional moment seeing that the doctor literally put her life in danger to save many people.

The most heartbreaking scene was when she finally falls ill. She laid on her back, weak and dying and she asked about the stage of the outbreak and how far the containment was going. Seeing her live her last days with so much grace and care for others even though she was in pain was very touching.

She died in August 19, 2014. Her sacrifice and courage limited the spread to only 20 cases with eight deaths. Three of her colleagues also died from contracting the Virus.

What lessons did you learn from the true story portrayed?

93 days taught me lessons about sacrifice, heroism, leadership and discipline. It opened my eyes to see that heroes may not always be politicians or soldiers but they could be ordinary people who go out of their way to do extraordinary things. People like doctors, caregivers, nurses, cleaners and etc.

Dr Adadevoh made me see that leadership is more about actions and not just titles. She made a tough decision that saved an entire nation. The movie opened my eyes to see the amount of courage it takes to stand at the hem of affairs in a time of national health crises. I saw that it’s normal to be afraid but the call for duty and sacrifice is stronger.

It’s also taught me the importance of early response and team work because she wasn’t able to do it alone but her team helped and the early response from the country helped to curb the spread. Some other counties that didn’t act fast lost thousands of people.

This movie was dedicated to her and she received so many post humus awards from the government including a street named after her in Abuja and a healthcare foundation built in her name.

How did it make you feel about the people or time period it represented?

It made me have so much respect for the people who worked in the health industry as at that time. Remember that they also have families, fears and even future plans yet they stepped up to take responsibility for the situation.

The movie showed a time in the history of Nigeria where the government, the people and health sector all came together to for a purpose. That persons was really intense and frightening but filled with unknown heroes. 93 days showed that humanity can shine brightest even in chaos.

This is a must watch movie and I do hope you enjoyed reading through my post. Thanks.
