Hi Movie Lovers,

Welcome to my entry for this week's challenge with the theme "Old is Gold" For this challenge I decided to revisit one of Nigeria's most memorable classic comedy movies/series made before the year 2000; Papa Ajasco. This movie is more than entertainment, it becomes a strong part of Nigerian film history and childhood memories for those of us who grew up in the late 90s.

Wale Adenuga created Papa Ajasco (1996-2000), which tells humorous stories about a middle-aged man who was well known for his bald head and exaggerated lies. He was always in endless trouble, especially in his marriage and friendships. There were other unforgettable characters like Mama Ajasco, Boy Alinco, Pa James and Miss Pepeiye. Each character were unique and brought different flavors to the story which makes it more lively and relatable.

What Felt Different About The Storytelling Of The Movie Compared To Newer Films?

Well, one thing that was different about the storytelling in Papa Ajasco from the modern movies is its simplicity. It has a straightforward storyline, no heavy special effects or complicated plots. It depends on dialogue, body language, facial expressions and situational comedy. Unlike movies nowadays which relied on technology and fast paced editing, Papa Ajasco focused more on real life situations and moral lessons hidden in the comedy.

Did The Film Age Well, Or Did Some Parts Feel Outdated?

Sure! Papa Ajasco has aged really well in many ways. It still makes us laugh even today. However they are certain areas that feels outdated, areas like fashion styles, filming quality and some cultural views about marriage and gender roles. Despite all these, the core message is still relevant; honesty, humility, and contentment are better than deception and pride which brings humiliation in the end.

What Do You Think Made This Movie A “Classic”?

What makes Papa Ajasco a true classic is its timeless humor and strong character identity. Each character has their own role and personality that viewers can recognize and remember. The movie is so real that it reflects our society so well about family issues, friendships, greed, love, and social struggles. Some lines in the movie even became popular catchphrases today, which shows that the movie is deeply connected with us.

How Did The Characters Or Themes Relate To Today’s World?

We can still relate to the themes in Papa Ajasco. Papa always lied and sought to impress others and this often landed him in trouble, which teaches us to always be ourselves, and avoid a fake lifestyle especially in this era of social media. It also teaches us that pretending to be what we're not can disrupt our peace of mind and relationships. The marital conflicts between Papa and Mama Ajasco can be seen in modern families too, and this reminds us of the importance of communication as the lifeboat of any relationship and responsibility too.

Goodness watching Papa Ajasco again reminded me that old movies may lack modern technology but they are very rich in morals, values, humor and meaning. It's a true proof of the saying ", Old is Gold." Yes story can be impactful without complexity. It can make us laugh, teach us values and bring memories that last longer. Yes qualities that of every classic movie should have.
