Teuku Umar, who was born in Meulaboh, West Aceh in 1854, was the son of a Uleebalang named Teuku Achmad Mahmud from a marriage with King Meulaboh's younger sister. Umar has two sisters and three brothers.

Umar's ancestors were Datuk Makhudum Sati from Minangkabau. He is a descendant of Rear Admiral Nanta who is a representative of the Aceh Sultanate during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda in Pariaman. [1]. One of the descendants of Datuk Makhudum Sati had served the Sultan of Aceh, who at that time was threatened by a Commander of Sagi who wanted to seize power. Thanks to his services, the person was appointed Uleebalang VI Mukim with the title Teuku Nan Ranceh. Teuku Nan Ranceh has two sons, Teuku Nanta Setia and Teuku Ahmad Mahmud. After the death of Teuku Nan Ranceh, Teuku Nanta Setia replaced her father's position as Uleebalang VI Mukim. He had a daughter named Cut Nyak Dhien [2].

Teuku Umar from childhood was known as a smart, brave child, and sometimes fought with peers. He also has a hard and unyielding nature in facing all problems. Teuku Umar never received formal education. Even so, he was able to become a strong, intelligent and brave leader.

Teuku Umar distributed weapons looted to the Acehnese army, and led back the people's resistance. and Teuku Umar managed to reclaim the 6 Mukim area from the Dutch. Nanta Setia, Cut Nyak Dhien and Teuku Umar returned to the area of 6 Mukim and lived in Lampisang, Aceh Besar, which also became the headquarters of the Aceh army.

2 years after the Nicero incident, on June 15, 1886 arrived at the Rigaih port of the ship "Hok Canton" which was named by a Danish sailor named Captain Hansen, with the intention of exchanging weapons with pepper. Hansen intended to trap Umar to board his ship, kidnap him and run the pepper that was going to be loaded, to the port of Ulee Lheu, and handed over to the Dutch who had promised a reward of $ 25 thousand to the head of Teuku Umar.

Umar was suspicious of the conditions proposed by Hansen, and sent an envoy. Hansen insisted Umar must come alone. Teuku Umar then set up a strategy. Early in the morning one of the Commander with 40 of his soldiers infiltrated the ship. Hansen didn't know that he was surrounded.
The next morning Teuku Umar arrived and demanded the repayment of pepper as much as $ 5 thousand. But Hansen broke his promise, and ordered his men to arrest Umar. Teuku Umar was ready, and signaled to his men. Hansen was successfully paralyzed and shot while trying to escape. Mrs. Hansen and John Fay were held as hostages, while the crew was released. The Dutch were very angry because the plan failed. [3]

The war continued, in 1891 Teungku Chik Di Tiro and Teuku Commander of Polem VIII Raja Kuala (father of Teuku Panglima Polem IX Muhammad Daud) died in battle. The Netherlands was actually very difficult because the cost of the war was too big and long.
