This Day in Pop Music History: 22 Jun - Herb Alpert 'This Guy's in Love with You'

in #music6 years ago

1968 - 50 years ago today, Herb Alpert had his first number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘This Guy’s in Love with You’. It was also the first number one hit for A&M Records, and for co-writers Burt Bacharach & Hal David. The hit remained at the number one position for four weeks. Alpert attained the song by asking Bacharach if he had any suitable, unused material. Before recording it, he first perfomed it on a TV special, “The Beat of the Brass”. It reached number three on the UK charts, and Alpert also recorded Spanish and Italian versions. When Alpert’s ‘Rise’ reached number one 11 years later, he became the first recording artist to attain that position for both a vocal and an instrumental hit.
