Music from Trash
The loud applause ended the musical performance of the men in white clothing in the cafeteria of the Japanese Study Center (PSJ), Campus Universitas Indonesia, Depok. The audience was mesmerized by the sound of musical instruments that resembled the sounds of nature, which sometimes sounded fals. "It's natural that fals, his name is also from the garbage," said Dodong Kodir, leader of the group who introduced themselves as Lungsuran Daur.
Dodong who is retired from Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (STSI) Bandung, said that the various works can be created because of his habit of "like from a young age." Dodong happy to try to make the sounds that can not be obtained from the existing musical instruments.
The result of his work is not just a musical instrument, but also an invitation to "concert" on campuses or art buildings, from Indonesia to around the world, of course with only "garbage". Some of the countries he has visited are the United States, Denmark, Japan, Spain, France, Greece and Belgium.
When asked about the sequence of musical instruments made of more than 100 pieces, the birth figure Tasikmalaya, November 8, 1951 is admitted can not remember exactly, "What is clear every event that happened, I always make a musical instrument to remember it," he said.
He gave the example of "Sagara", a rectangular instrument with a circle from the wall clock frame in the middle and a small grain of iron from the bicycle wheel. Musical instruments that can mimic the sound of waves in the sea was made to commemorate the tsunami disaster in Aceh in 2004. He can not remember exactly when the tool is made, which is obvious not long after the tsunami.
Sagara, along with other musical instruments created by the father of three children, was created with the aim of raising awareness of the environment. Although at first the sounds emerging from the musical instruments of his creation such as the sound of a tornado, landslides, lightning, tigers, birds chirping, crowing chicken or the sound of the fly is made without any purpose. However, later the sounds made Kang Dodong feel that, "Do not waste also appeal to us," until he decided to care about environmental issues.
Awareness of this environment continues to form a group of musical instruments made from raw materials waste or used goods with the name "Lungsuran Daur" earlier, which when translated into the Indonesian language can be interpreted as "recycling". Hope the formation of the group is so that people are intrigued and care about environmental sustainability when knowing the raw materials of these musical instruments.
Kang Dodong said when there are parties who invite him to engage in environmental preservation. He believes everyone is able to save the environment in their own way and ability.
