Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Tumble outta bed
And stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawnin' and stretchin' and try to come to life
Jump in the shower
And the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets
The traffic starts jumpin'
With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5

[Chorus]
Working 9 to 5
What a way to make a living
Barely gettin' by
It's all taking
And no giving
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it

[Verse 2]
9 to 5, for service and devotion
You would think that I
Would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead
But the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me
Mmmmm...
They let you dream
Just to watch them shatter
You're just a step
On the boss man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away
In the same boat
With a lot of your friends
Waiting for the day
Your ship will come in
And the tide's gonna turn
An' it's all gonna roll you away

Reflection

Dolly Parton is an American singer, record producer, songwriter, philanthropist, and business woman. She is widely known for her great work in the genre of country music.

9 to 5 is an exceptional song that captures the life of an average worker in a corporate environment. The life of the worker is confined and controlled by the rules of the organization.

The singer says such workers can only dream but finds it difficult to achieve their dreams. This is because he or she is just a ladder in the step of the boss.

She says the worker will never find fulfilment until his time is up. Then he will be unable to make any meaningful contribution to his personal life.

Nice choice and fine post re the lyrics. Such drudgery and exploitation seems to be a near universal condition.

Until we change it, that is. As Dolly said, "The tide's gonna turn."

Kudos to Dolly and to you for expressing the situation.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I hope the tide is gonna turn soon. Unfortunately, I am writing this from my 9 to 5 desk.

You mean your "9 to 5 imprisonment"?

I'd advise you to foment your own personal worker's revolution. It might take a few years or even decades to loosen the shackles, but the freedom is worth every bit of energy you put into the struggle.

Vive la revolution!

Hmmm interesting points! It may take years but I will breakthrough eventually. I feel inspired right now
