🎶Four Tune Friday! On Nineties Friday!🎶 Picking & Talking Four Tunes + Bonus Tune! When “Punk” Went Full Pop! 🎸 Green Day & Blink-182 & No Doubt & Offspring!
On this weeks Nineties Friday I try to mix it up and I bring ya tunes that got a ton of play! I often go with lesser known songs but this week I thought let’s go as big as we can! Full on Pop tunes from four bands who all started in the punk or ska scene! I don’t just pick songs from big records, I go full pop & pick the songs they crossed over to pop top 40 radio. I know some listeners might not love it but I wanted to try something different since I often avoid these songs.
I’ll post some discussion about each pick/tune first and post the songs below! I threw in a couple extra tunes in the middle of discussion to look back at some of the bands prior work I discussed! Enjoy! 🎸
Starting off with the one ska band in the bunch I go with No Doubt’s mega huge pop hit “Don’t Speak”. Before this third single the band was mostly limited to alternative rock radio & MTV success.
Followed by maybe the biggest song of 1998, “Time Of Your Life” by Green Day! The song was every school’s graduation song for years to come along with even making the Seinfeld 1998 series finale show closing credits. Green Day got a lot of shit for having a “Acoustic” pop song but it was huge for a reason, it’s catchy!
Next up it’s “What’s My Age Again from Blink-182. The 1999 pop radio hit took Blink-182 from potential alternative rock one hit wonder.
Last up besides the bonus tune is the Offspring! I gotta be honest here, I love many songs on the record but truthfully the pop crossover isn’t my favorite. I’m of course talking the 1997/1998 hit “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)”. It was on the 1997 released album and came outta nowhere blowing up on pop radio & MTV. I personally prefer the alt rock third single “The Kids Aren’t Alright”
but to stay in the theme of today I gotta go with the pop crossover hit! I have to say I think outta these four tunes the Offspring’s “Pretty Fly” comes off to me like the most corny and least interesting song. But given the other selections it is the only thing that truly fits here in the 4th spot! Enjoy!
Alright let’s get into the tunes!
Let’s Go! 🎸
Band - Offspring
Song - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
Album - Americana (1997)
For my Bonus Tune I go with a band that didn’t hit the same heights as the other 4 but fits the same vibe! Phenix TX is the band, they were very similar to Blink-182 and had a pop crossover hit in late 1999 while being managed by Mark from Blink-182. Enjoy!
Band - Fenix TX
Song - All My Fault
Album - Fenix TX (1999)
