COPY PASTA - ORIGINAL STEEMIT MUSIC! - WRITING A SONG IN 10 MINUTES OR LESS!

I was sitting here at my friends,

hanging out with @mal402, and realized I didn't have a new song to share, as I've been pretty busy the last few nights. So I decided to challenge myself and see what I could come up with in 10 minutes or less, and this is it, haha. Nothing to write home about, but I actually do dig the bassline and the general groove.

I started with the drums

and just set up a basic syncopated sort of swingy beat. It builds up to the chorus where the snare hits come in with the open hi hat hits, then repeats two more times around. Now, to make things interesting, I copy and pasted the midi track from the drums into the bassline, and it actually worked out awesome.

The bassline worked out harmonically,

beginning in Eb minor basically, playing an F, Eb, Db, and back to Eb. Basically it just builds on top that, so when the closed hihats come in, that adds an Ab above that progression, making it even more groovy and weird. For the chorus, we don't explicity change keys, but essentially that happens, moving to Bb minor, but playing the V, Vi, Vii back to V. Basically it just moves back and forth between the two keys (Green is the Eb minor part, and Blue is the Bb minor line).

The third instrument I added

was the fuzzy synth, INSTRUMENT 3 in the overview. It actually plays in Eb dorian, so we hear the C natural, which adds a variation in harmony, and keeps the song interesting. During the chorus, it just plays F, Gb, and Ab, and ends on E natural, which is the flat 2 of Eb and moves us back to the verse.

Since I was under a time constraint,

I didn't really get the transitions worked out very nicely, but yknow you get what you deserve lol. INSTRUMENT 4 and 5 come in at the end of each verse, with #5 playing an Eb minor on the second half of each measure, and #4 playing a little arpeggiated chord at the beginning of each measure of the last bar. I will go back and make these a little more even, and more effectively build into the chorus.

The last instrument is #6,

and that's as far as I could make it in 10 minutes. #6 is another arpeggiated synth, but it arpeggiates half the speed of the previous instrument. It also plays a strange chord over the Bb minor, using an FminSus4, and then adding a minor second interval of C/Db on top at the end of each measure. I would like to go back and change this up too, one day I will.

That's it for now, hope you enjoy the song! That's all I could finish in 10 minutes haha, it was a fun challenge, maybe next time I'll film myself writing it.
