Grapthar's Song of the Day: The Velvet Underground 'All Tomorrow's Parties'
The Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow's Parties
The Velvet Underground are possibly
one of the most influential rock bands ever, although it took 30 some odd years before their influence was recognized by the mainstream. They formed in 1964 in New York City, and existed in the underground scene for basically their whole existence. Despite their relationships with other well-known artists and musicians at the time, their albums generally did not sell very well, nor did they receive much radio play. However, they were one of the major reasons that the punk scene began to emerge in the '70s, and are often considered a 'rock band's rock band', influencing many major artists but not receiving the credit until decades later.
Listen to All Tomorrow's Parties by the Velvet Underground here.
This song appeared on their
1967 debut album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, which is now widely considered one of the most important albums ever recorded, despite it's initial commercial failure. While other bands were experimenting with psychedelia and the aesthetics of the hippie movement, The Velvet Underground represented a darker, more real side of the culture. They used a lot of pop structures from earlier rock and roll, but infused it with a more artistic, poetic element, touching on topics such as drug addiction, cross-dressing, and depression.

I like this song a lot, the album is definitely one of a great many good ones from that time and deserves quite a lot of praise.
I like this one. It has a bit of a grim feel but Nico's voice is authentic and cool.
Venus In Furs is my fav from this album. Who else would make a BDSM song based on the 1870 Novel of the same name! It's great to see that Angie covered it a few months ago for the new generation to discover.
I think my favorite VU song is, What Goes On, from their 3rd album in 69. It's more of a straight up Rock song, similar to the Garage Rock stuff I love. It's true that they were a very influential band!
Yeah it definitely has a super unique sound, nothing else from that era sounds like this song.
I love Venus in Furs too. I will check out that cover, sounds awesome!
I always wondered about "What Goes On", and if Lou Reed had heard the Beatles song by the same name (which came out 4 years earlier). Both are great, but I was always curious about the title's origins.
