🎶 Songs That Are A Fun Challenge To Sing 🎶 My Top Picks

in #music7 years ago

As a singer there isn't much I love to do more than sing, so to make things more interesting for myself I like to give myself a challenge from time to time.

I have a rather large vocal range, so sometimes it can be difficult to actually find a song that can provide me with a challenge.

There is nothing like singing along to an amazing vocal track and being able to nail every note, it's almost an elated feeling.

So here are just a few of my favourite songs to sing, for a bit of a challenge.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj
Bang Bang

It takes you no time to get into this song, the tempo and power vocals make it an irresistible challenge.

Especially given the three vocalists, this song can wear you out if you try to sing all three parts at once - but it's just so much fun to pelt out some beautiful trills with some passion.

A great song that will get you up and out of your chair and ready to move, while you test the limits of your vocal range and skills.

George
Special Ones

George is an Australian band and the lead singer Katie Noonan has a phenomenal voice and vocal range, a rare and unbelievable talent that sounds exactly the same live as pre recorded.

Katie is known for her ability to sing multiple genres including Opera, she provides an insane challenge for me and often times I just come short - a truly brilliant artist worth hearing at least once.

For a quick example of her phenomenal live abilities check out the following video around the 32 minute mark, and prepare to be blown away faultless live performance - also another moment at 1:59:00 and 2:44:00 well worth checking out!

Beyonce
Listen

Everyone knowns Beyonce has an amazing voice with an incredible range and control, I love a lot of her songs and there are so many great ones to choose when going for a challenge.

A few to note would be Halo, Love on Top and Check up on it, some are for range others for vocal gymnastics and others for timing - Beyonce's songs provide a great workout for the vocal cords no matter what area you wish to challenge.

Savage Garden
You Can Still Be Free

I'm not sure how well known Savage Garden was worldwide or how many people know of this song in particular, but growing up in Australia as they reached the height of their success I heard a lot of Savage Garden.

This song is beautiful and yet haunting, the notes held for extended time and Darren Hayes falsetto are coupled in beautiful harmony.

I love a challenge and this song measures up, timing your breaths can be some of the hardest work with holding a song together - this is worth taking the time to hear and isn't like most of their pop songs.

Christina Aguilera
Hurt

This song is emotional and full of vocal gymnastics I just can't get enough of, Christina Aguilera has an amazing voice and loves to pelt out a tune - all things I look for when searching for a challenge.

There are plenty of her songs to choose from for a challenge from Dirty to Aint No Other Man and even fighter, her songs usually contain multiple challenges such as timing breath and vocal range.

Sia
Chandelier

This is my go to song when I feel the need to get something out of my system, there is nothing quite as mood changing as music in my opinion.

Sia has amazing range and style, I love to sing it and nothing feels more awesome than hitting those high notes with all you've got.

Most of Sia's music is great for a vocal challenge and really just enjoyable to sing, her song's always manage to make me feel something they are just so emotive and full of passion.

Cat's
Memory

I know this song was originally written and performed by Barbra Streisand, but the version I first heard and learned to love of this song was from the musical Cat's.

I love the range used throughout this song, I love the emotion and passion in the lyrics - there really isn't much I don't love about this song.

This was also one of the first songs I sung around people and had them react to my voice in surprised disbelief - the way hearing the song affected me.

I was hooked with singing from that point on, up until then I hadn't realised everyone couldn't hit these notes and control their voices to such a degree.

Cat's is a beautiful song, well worth listening and even having a go yourself.

Guy Sebastian ft Lupe Fiasco
Battle Scars

What can I say another Australian with an amazingly powerful and controlled voice, hearing him sing can bring shivers down your spine.

He has a brilliant ability to make his voice hit every single note in a massive vocal trill, his control is phenomenal and unlike other artists today.

If you only listen to one song let this be it and listen until the end, there is a moment towards the end where he does some truly beautiful vocal gymnastics.

I hope you liked my selection of challenging songs to sing, there are literally too many amazing songs to include them all so this is just a short list of the ones that came to mind.

great post kyrstle! Fantastic choices big ups to you and hope you are well

Hey lovely, yes I'm doing great thanks.

Hope you're doing well and I was wondering if I could pick your brain when you get a chance? - No stress if you can't :)

Just wondering if you know or can suggest any video editing software, that might be able to help me mix my singing acapella with backing music?

I have been looking into it but everything I have found is way over my head, with my hearing issues I sing better when I can follow a vocal lead - this is why I only post acapella songs.

Anyway I just thought I'd ask someone who clearly has some experience, don't stress if you can't think of anything off hand it's not a big deal.

Cheers for the comment and have a good one :)

I use sony vegas for video editing if thats what your looking for, and you can add multi layer tracks in there. With audio mixing though if your looking to just add your vocal to an instrumental or audio recording, you can download and use sonar7 or Calkwalk . You might need some youtube tutorial on how to do it all exactly, but its pretty simple once you get going.

Thanks so much lovely, I am so sorry I missed this the other day and it has taken me so long to get back to you.

I will really need to check these out and figure out how to do it, because I need to mix the video and audio from my video and then add backing music only.

This is way out of my wheelhouse, hence my acapella renditions of everything - might take some time but I will get there.

Thanks so much for all your help I really appreciate it :)

This was a good post. Not a fan of some of these artists, but as a singer myself, I will have to agree that there is skill.

I love challenging vocal ranges.

An incredible performance with some amazing vocals..

Awesome stuff had a skim through too long to watch all now but I'll get to it :)

Thought you might like this one, sometimes it's not about the range but the tonality.

Thanks for the comment :)

Oh I agree completely. I have seen this and loves it..

I thought you may have, but given the theme I couldn't help but share it :)

Bookmarked for late night listening!

Well hope you enjoy it when you get to have a listen, have a good one :)

This list is insane and if you have this kind of range, I wanna hear you go girl! I love new songs that challenge my voice as well. I lost a bit of my voice a while back though because I had a drummer that had no dynamics and he was a basher. I had to project more than normal to hear myself over his cymbals and I've never been the same since :(
I'm praying and doing vocal exercises to try to get it back. I guess we'll see.

Thanks for posting this!

Well thanks my range isn't what it used to be, but I'm getting back there and even have a specialist appointment soon to see what's going on - I lost my voice originally almost 8 years ago when I got in an argument and screamed so loud I broke something.

It has been a really really long journey to get back here, and I still at time get pain and have to stop singing for a while so I don't lose it again.

I used to love to pelt out a tune so that probably didn't help things either, I have submitted a couple of entries into the open mic contest here on steemit.

If you'd like to have a listen to my current range, not quite the 4 octaves of years past - but hopefully again soon one day.

I suggest seeing a specialist to make sure you haven't got nodes or have torn something (I think I did and it took years to heal) but given that I am singing again I'd say there's hope for everyone.

Thanks for the comment, followed :)

Nice post and songs!!

well some of us liked it

Thanks, glad to hear you liked it :)

I like complex songs for moving the mouth.
Like ieva's polka

Lol I love this song no fricken idea what they are talking about, but you just can't help but get into the rhythm.

Just find yourself bopping along to this one, cheers for the addition.

There's translations out there on the interwebs.

But basically, the chorus is: they all dance spinning round and round
1st part. Girl meets boy from out of town (at the dance) He's handsome and probably the type that leaves.
2nd part. Mom says you not date that boy
3rd part, Boy says I'm going to make her mine.
4th part, Daughter says I'm going to keep him.

(or something like that)

Oh awesome, I just love it's catchy style - lots of be dop bops lol just can't help but bop along :)
