Meet The Cajom, the fabulous beat box.
My love story with The Cajom started a few years ago while I was visiting a Filipino friend in Manila. Since then, this instrument has become one of my most loyal companions! It is time for me to present it to my Steemian friends!
Imagine an organic drum machine you never need to plug into anything. A drum machine so easy to use that anybody can learn how to play it well enough for some good musical fun, and this, within just a few hours of practice. A drum machine that you can carry around everywhere you go and jam along with other musicians anywhere, anytime. Too good to be true?
Nope…
Meet The Cajom!
1/ My first encounter with the Cajom
One evening, while I was stayingin Manila, a Filipino friend and I went out to a nice restaurant. In the background, a band was playing some smooth pop covers that lightened the atmosphere.
As we were sitting at the opposite side of the room from the band, I didn’t really take much notice of them. But during the last set, I realized that there was no drum kit, despite a very natural drum sound guiding the music. I guessed the drum sounds came from pre-programmed sequences coming out of the keyboard. Yet, the sound felt really natural and warm.
Intrigued, I went to see the keyboard player and asked him how he had managed to program such a smooth sound out of his synth. he smiled and showed me his seat: it was a box, but not just any box, it was a Cajom…
Despite being quite active playing live music at the time, I had never encountered that instrument. I even didn't know it existed! I asked him if I could give try it. He explained the basics to me and let me have a go on it. Obviously, as it was my first time, I must have not been very good, but for me it was mind-blowing that such a basic thing could sound so cool. It felt that the beats I had in me could just flow without having to pass through an interface. It felt like an extension of me, so natural.
As soon as I returned home, I went on internet, checked what was out there, and ordered one. Best 150 Euros I have ever spent! Soon I was able to let my body flow and become a living beat machine. Today, I gig with friends on a regular basis.
2/ What is a Cajom ?
A Cajom is just a box on which one sits on. I actually sometimes use it as a basic stool myself.
A “Cajom” in Spanish means a drawer, a crate, a tray or even a bin. Basically, Cajom means “recipient”.
It is believed that the Cajom’s originates from Peru. African slaves, deprived from their traditional drums, would use packing crates instead. It hooked also Cuba where it became a musical instrument played in various Latino styles. It crossed the ocean and boomeranged back to Spain where it became a major instrument in the development of modern Flamenco music.
The cajom has evolved now, and entered nearly all music styles: blues, Jazz, folk and pop/rock. It is even used in techno and electronic music. This beat box is just incredibly versatile. Once you are done reading this post, go to Youtube and search for Cajom... You will be amazed.
One side of the box is made of a flexible layer of plywood. This is the playing surface. On the opposite side there is a hole for the sound to diffuse in the room. The sides are made of thicker wooden wood. Inside the Cajom there are wires and sometimes little bells to give a rich snare tone.
3/ How to play the Cajom ?
What I find really magic about the Cajom is that if you have some rhythm in you and work on the basics just a few hours, you are ready to jam and have a lot of musical fun. So let's check out these basics!
In regards to posture, you can sit on the Cajom straight, or find a kind of swing balance. The back should always remain straight whatever posture your choose. The first position is probably best, but I personally prefer to swing. It make me feel less static. Important: keep the upper part of the body straight to ease strain on the back.
The position at which you hit the plywood surface will give you the tone. There are three main positions: In the mid high center, you get a kick. On the top sides, you get a snare sound. On the extreme top of the plywood sheet, you can get a snare with a snappier tone.
There is also a variety of ways to hit the Cajom to bring nuances to your rhythmic riffs. You can even slide your foot on the plywood while playing to make some cool sound effects (a little like a sweeping filter).
I made a 2 minute video for this article where the Cajom presents itself. Then I show a few examples of easy but effective beats.
4/ How to Record the Cajom.
As a music producer, I had to find a way to record The Cajom. Just putting a mike in front of it without further thought, produces a sound that does not do justice to the instrument (like in the video). It took me some research before being able to record the warmth of the Cajom.
The set up I use consists of 2 microphones. For the kick, I first insert a towel inside the Cajom and wedge a Shure Beta 91 on top of the towel . The second microphone is a Shure SM57 that I use for the snare sound. I place the SM57 place about 30-50 cm in front of the Cajom. Both mikes are recorded on separate tracks for further treatment (EQ, reverb etc…).
I used this set up for a collab with another Steemian (@OneTrueBrother). I liked a song he had composed and that he was singing while playing his guitar. I asked him to send me the video, and was able to play various instruments, including the Cajom on top of the audio track. Here is the result.
5/ What the Cajom did for me...
In my early 30s, I was a heavy gigger, playing live 2-3 times per months and touring with a metal band in Zuid Holland. Unfortunately, I experienced an ear trauma during one of our gigs that left me with tinnitus and hyperaccousy. I had to stop all amplified music. Actually, I had to stop all music :-(.
After a couple of years, I was able to play music again but had to cross out playing with amplified bands, and that, even with earplugs. Too dangerous... Yet, I missed gigging so much!
The Cajom came to the rescue! Its great drum sound coupled with a moderate volume got me back in the game and allowed me to taste the same feelings again. Now I jam regularly, although this time it is not a career goal, but just for the pleasure of playing music with others.
What I really like about the Cajom is that it has the same spirit as acoustic guitar. Portable, you can just bring your beat stool, and start grooving the place. Take a guitarist and a bass-man, add a Cajom, and you have a band without the need to set up a drum kit!
To be honest, I don't play drums at all, and thus, am not a very good player on the Cajom (my main instrument is bass). Yet, it is soooo much fun to play even with a small level. Anyone can groove the room!
The Cajom and I, we are definitely friends... Forever!

Hi, I’m @muphy (see intro post),

@muphy you're playing it really perfect brother, I love Cajon, we call it کاخون or Cakhoon , :) great article and great performance brother!! peace to you!!
Thank you for your kind words Davood :-)
I saw things are going quite well music-wise for you on Steemit. I am really glad about that: you deserve it! Keep going and stay inspired!
@muphy I also love to watch your scientific videos, I love space and anything out there, in past I always following science news and documentaries, in these days I am just working, I wish I can find time to watch them all, man I never knew that you have this much knowledge!! I have seen your last post, about the mirror world, I really love to watch it but still busy as you know just working (my only job) everyday to make some money for the moment and future, and I am really glad that its working for me finally LOL , thank you so much, I just try to do something new everyday :) , I am glad that in steemit they understand the price of knowledge that you have (all the great post that you are writing and creating videos), I also know that you deserve more than these, but maybe this is just a beginning :)
best wishes for you my friend!
Hey Davood,
Yes I noticed that you were producing a lot these days. You must start to have quite a catalog. Maybe you could make a few extra bucks by uploading on sites like Pond5. I get a nice passive income for my own tracks there.
4 months, it is just the beginning! :-), yet, I don't post everyday because it takes a huge amount of time to build up these scientific articles, and I have my students to care for first (my priority).
I can't wait for the scholar year to be over so I can go back spending time in the studio. Yet, I do not think I will post my tracks on Steemit (I didn't get the attention of the "music whales" with my previous attempts...), so on Steemit,I prefer to focus on my other interests, science , and continue to make my music work for me elsewhere, as it already does. I will make a few exception of course, like for example the upcoming mini-album for which I will post probably a few excerpts on D-Sound.
You? Do you have musical projects longer term (Album? gigs?).
How are you @muphy :) I was sending you some messages in discord, I think you might not be online over there :) , I will be glad if we could talk about those scientific things some time :) , as I said, still struggling with life problems, but well my favorite genre is rock music and meaningful lyrics to singing them, If I find them I will create albums :) , I mean writing some good lyrics and creating some special and new tracks, or maybe creating my own genre.
we you are totally right, and most of this is about the situation, for example for one second think if Bill gates would waste his windows project in a site which nobody even check that work or spend money on it, I am sure we lost many of our bests here but well for me it was the only way to make some money :)) , who doesn't like to make money like the way some artists in LA or other cities in US making (Hit tracks) , Happy or Gangnam Style form LOL , some people telling me that my genre is not good or my music is not as good as for example Gangnamstyle, I tell them : Money! Money give the value to art works in these days, if not then the TV and many other social places had great pieces on their first pages :) not a photo of Kim Kardashian or some new Rappers or Pop hit singers, I mean for example someone like Paco Delucio a great flamenco guitarist, if you ask people they don't know him, god father of new form of Flamenco , but if you ask them they know Justin Beiber I think even if a man is in a jungle somewhere in Africa he knows Justin LOL
and as I said your works are really pro, and you are not like some people who just calling themselves sound engineers, you are a real engineer with much knowledge! I respect!
as you might know Iran is banned from outside, and also people, we are banned from outside and inside!
outside : sanctions
Inside : blocking any useful site! (even steemit and dsound are blocked and I use a vpn and choosing austria or canada as my ip server.
I said about these banning because I meant that the only way I can make money is with crypto, we dont have Master cards or any other cards, we are not able to sign up even in paypal.
governments are banning people not each other!
I will check Pond5 and try to do that if its crypto then I can cash out if not, then I have no way :(
thank you brother!!
peace!
Hey Davood.
I am sorry to hear about the banking blockade you are subject to. I find this ridiculous, from both sides (external sanctions, and internal blocks). You are not responsible for the stupidity of governing bodies, yet you pay the price for it. Yes Crypto is the way to go, yet in this situation I wonder how you manage to cash out.
Pond5 pays me by Paypal, but I think they can also by bank transfer (to be checked). I am pretty certain that they are not ready for the crypto world, but I haven't checked their payment methods for a while. Maybe you can arrange a system similar to when you cash out BTC from your broker (a banktransfer from Pond5 to your account at your Broker's? explore and even ask them at Pond5 - they are topnotch in individual support).
If I had not gone into teaching as my main activity, and kept on making production music, today, I would probably be self-suffiscient just with the music. Yet, I would be bored to death and probably in an existential crisis right now.I think it would also have hurt my inspiration producing crap music like a machine (when I mean crap music, I mean great pro sound with a boring composition because background music...). Yet, it makes a nice passive income. My best selling tracks have reached the 4 digits over the years. Now, I prefer putting music back in the hobby box for a while, producing what I want not what works :-)
Let me know how it goes, be well and stay inspired, my friend!
I loved your addition to onetruebrother's original song on youtube, which is why I began to follow you in the frst place. This post greatly assists in my understanding of the Cajom which I loved in your video and love even more now! This is an instrument I could play and have some fun with, so now off to explore and purchase.
I am so glad I was able to lift the mystery of the Cajon for you dear Ricia. And maybe even have triggered a Cajom vibe in you!
If you do find one you like and purchase it, please let me know: we could find a moment to review the basics together by Skype so to get you started in The Cajom Journey!
Hey @muphy,
Somehow missed this reply and have just come across it now. Maybe because life is disrupted with all the snow here. What a kind offer you made too. I did buy one and have been learning fine via youtube videos on the basics. There are loads of them, to keep me going, but thanks anyway, much appreciated.
Hey Ricia, You are welcome.
It is true I also realised there were lots of great videos out there. When I bought the Cajom though, that was not the case yet. I self taught myself Cajon by playing over some Maceo Parker Funk :-).
I too, have only learned of this instrument recently. I think it's when I saw a video of The Monkees in concert showing Micky Dolenz playing a cajon. Dolenz has even started building his own with one of his daughters and sells them by Dolenz & Daughters http://www.dolenzanddaughters.com/cajon-drum/4593190149
It's a simple yet effective instrument.
Simple & effective, exactly. And it stays organic yet is really versatile, and can be played in so many environments. For a tribal trip, as a fusion percussion, as jazz support (with brushes), as folk music around a camp fire, as a drum in a rock band (Even the Red hot chilly Peppers) used one of them at one of their concert (check Youtube) etc.
A couple of years ago, my father took as a little personal project to build one for me as a Christmas present. I was touched! Yet, it didn't sound that good. As I live abroad and was flying, I couldn't take it back with me. Yet, weirdly, after a few years, when I was visiting my parents, I picked it up again, and it sounded so much better! Like other wooden instruments, it appears to mature with time :-).
I used to think it was just an empty, wooden box. I never realized there were so many nuances to it.
Thanks @muphy. I very much enjoyed reading your post. Well crafted, educating and looks nice. Love your personal story in it and your gig. All the best!
Cheers @Johano,
I am glad you enjoyed discovering (or rediscovering) the Cajom with me. Because of comments like yours, I know all the work putting this article together is well worth it :-)!
Be well
What a good presentation of this very particular instrument !
I love the smooth and groovy sounds you can get with these :)
Thank you @cryptofrench, I appreciate your kind comment. It was indeed quite some work to put all this together.
That is why I like Cajom's too :-)
@muphy WoW, this is nothing like any other instrument I've seen. Is interesting how many cultures through time have adopted other cultures traditions/instrumenst..ect :) Interesting post. Best wishes to you, - @splendorhub
Yes, music knows no barriers between cultures or people. I love to play on many instruments from the weirdest origins, Maybe I'll present some future posts. Yet, The Cajom is really one of my favorites!
Thank you Nora for your kind comment :-)
those beats were pic this is quite fantastic thing thanks for sharing the video along with it :D
Thanks @blazing.
It took a while to put all the material together, yet when I read all the cool comments, I am glad I did! So, are you ready to pick up a Cajom and start grooving yourself ;-) ?
i am really sorry that i can't put that much value in your post as a comment but i really appreciate your hard work :)
Outstanding post and narrative. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Barca, I am glad you enjoyed this visit of the Cajom.
This is the first time I hear a Cajom instrument. Can you play it? Wow, this is great. Your review of this tool is very interesting. Makes me fall in love. Nice to read the reviews. Congratulations.
Hi Lingi, thanks for the nice words.
