NEW MUSIC: Devonwho - 16kd / 4z_funk [electronic hip-hop]

Devonwho takes "beat music" in a more electronic music direction with very interesting results (audio)

Leaving Records, off-shoot label of the legendary Stones Throw Records, has been building a pretty eclectic roster of producers as of late. With a list of producers that contains the likes of people like Kiefer, Opio, Carlos Nino, Deantoni Parks, and many many more, Leaving records has pretty much a little something for everyone. Which brings me to Devonwho; someone I covered last year but who kind of slipped my mind. However, he has definitely grabbed my attention once again with this new track "16kd / 4z_funk", which does an amazing job of mashing modern day beat music with electro boogie funk. The beat itself is a bit on the slow side, with the drums definitely going for more of a retro, electronic vibe rather than a sampled one. Which in turn works perfectly with the woozy, atmospheric keyboards that fill out the rest of the track. There's a nice little switch up about halfway through the track to finish things up but doesn't stray to far from the vibe the track originally started from. In short, it's a unique take on the whole beat music genre and definitely has me curious what else he has in store for this beat cassette.
