A Steem playlist of Christmas music for the unofficial start of the holiday season
Every year, starting in November, @lisa.palmer, @cmp2020, and I have a family tradition of playing "The Game" with holiday music when we're together for long rides in the car.
We listen to the Pandora Channel, remlaPS Christmas Carols, and it has now been curated with thumbs-up and thumbs-down over the course of a decade or more - so others might also enjoy listening to it. It should be accessible to the public, though I guess it may be blocked from some regions around the world. In "The Game", points are earned by being the first to name the song title and the performer (without looking, of course). At the end of the car ride, whoever has the most points wins.
TBH, with his music skills and training, @cmp2020 has been the undisputed heavyweight champion for 12-15 years, but we all still enjoy playing.
Anyway, with Thanksgiving as the unofficial start of the US Holiday season, I thought I'd post video links with some of my holiday favorites. Maybe others will also enjoy these selections.
#10 - Little Drummer Boy - Bing Crosby and David Bowie
- Skip forward about 1:45 to get to the music
#9 - Last Christmas - Emilia Clarke (of Game of Thrones fame)
- Fast forward about 2 minutes to get to the music.
#8 - Sleigh Ride - Ella Fitzgerald
#7 - Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
#6 Baby it's Cold Outside - Leon Redbone and Zooey Deschanel
- TBH, I wasn't fond of this particular version until I saw Deschanel sing the song in the movie, Elf a few years ago. After that, this version has grown on me, and now it might be my favorite (I like the versions with Dean Martin and Martina McBride, Bing Crosby and Doris Day, and the original movie too - so it's hard to pick just one).
#5 - When Christmas Comes to Town - Matthew Hall And Meagan Moore
(from The Polar Express)
#4 - Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives
#3 - Up on the House Top - Gene Autry
- I played this to death on vinyl when I was a young child, and it's still a family favorite
#2 - The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
- Hard to pick one song. Anything by Nat King Cole is fantastic.
#1 - Home for the Holidays - Perry Como
- With it's prominent mentions of "Pennsylvania" and "Pumpkin Pie", how can this sit anywhere but #1?
Bonus songs
You won't hear these on Pandora, but @cmp2020 has a couple of his own Christmas compositions/arrangements.
A Merry Christmas (2018) - performed by the church youth choir
Christmas Medley: Lion and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (2024)
Follow his YouTube Channel to see what he has planned for this year.
If you celebrate Christmas, what are your favorite songs of the season?
