The Angel Tower Still Stands: A Legendary Goodbye to the Pomp Rock Pioneers 🕊️🎸
If you walked into a record store in the late 1970s, you couldn’t miss them. Amidst the rough, denim-clad punk bands and the dark, leather-bound theatrics of KISS, there was a group that looked like they had just descended from a higher plane.
Dressed in head-to-toe white satin, with flowing hair and a sound that bridged the gap between complex progressive rock and high-energy glam, ANGEL was a visual and sonic anomaly. Now, fifty years after they first plugged in their amps, founding members Frank DiMino and Punky Meadows are preparing to bring the curtain down.
The band has officially announced their farewell tour, giving fans across the globe one last chance to witness the "Pomp Rock" pioneers in all their glory. A major highlight of this final trek is a highly anticipated return to the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood on August 7. For a band that helped define the spectacle of the 70s Sunset Strip, this feels less like a gig and more like a legendary homecoming.
Fifty Years of a “Helluva Band”: The 2026 Anniversary Reissue
As the tour hits the road, the band is giving collectors a serious reason to clear some shelf space. To mark the 50th anniversary of their sophomore powerhouse, Helluva Band (1976), a special commemorative reissue has been released to coincide with the tour dates.
This album was a massive turning point for ANGEL. It’s the record that gave us "Feelin’ Right" and "The Fortune," cementing them as a band that could out-play the prog giants while keeping the hooks big enough for FM radio.
The 2026 Reissue Details:
- Remastered: Sourced from the original analog tapes, breathing new life into Punky Meadows’ riffs and Gregg Giuffria’s massive keyboard layers.
- Formats: 6-panel CD digipak and 180G vinyl.
- Limited Editions: Only 400 white-blue splatter and 600 red swirl versions are being pressed.
- Extras: Liner notes by renowned journalist Dave Reynolds.
Pro Tip: If you want the vinyl, act fast. You can grab it directly from Deko Entertainment.
Fifty Years of Magic: From Georgetown to the Arena
The ANGEL story began in the vibrant club scene of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The original lineup—DiMino, Meadows, Gregg Giuffria, Mickie Jones, and Barry Brandt—possessed an instant, undeniable chemistry.
That spectacle caught the eye of Gene Simmons. The KISS bassist discovered them in a nightclub and realized they were the perfect "ying" to the KISS "yang." While KISS was all black leather and fire, ANGEL was white satin and light. Simmons helped them land a deal with Casablanca Records, and the rest is rock history.
The Evolution of the Sound
ANGEL’s self-titled 1975 debut was a heavy slab of "pomp rock"—a blend of hard rock and keyboard-heavy progressive structures. Tracks like "Tower" became instant stage favorites. As the late 70s rolled in, the band shifted toward a melodic "glam-pop" sound with albums like On Earth As It Is In Heaven (1977) and Sinful (1979), featuring the holiday classic "The Winter Song."
The Personnel and the Legacy
Like many legends, ANGEL saw lineup changes. Original bassist Mickie Jones (who sadly passed away in 2009) remains a foundational pillar of the band's history. Following the initial 1981 split, the members took diverse paths:
- Frank DiMino: Contributed to the Flashdance and Metropolis soundtracks.
- Gregg Giuffria: Found massive MTV success with the band Giuffria ("Call to Your Heart").
- Punky Meadows: Returned with his solo effort, Fallen Angel, in 2016.
The current lineup has been remarkably stable since reforming in 2019, featuring Danny Farrow (rhythm guitar), Charlie Calv (keyboards), Billy Orrico (drums), and bassist Tommy “T-Bone” Caradonna, who joined in 2024.
