RE: How to Practice Creatively – Part 1
Nice post I have taught myself piano by painstakingly learning jazz standards , I can only play misty and to play it well I haveto practise. However when I feel jaded I play some blues piano and try solo over it .
Piano is really hard. I think people expect it to be easy because it is quite simple to make a sound - you just press a key. But the coordination with all the fingers that's required and hands together, it's a lot for the brain to think about. So having a good method for practicing really makes a big difference.
Thanks for reading! More to come. :)
I am lucky in a few things I started off as a drummer and still play in bands so I have good rhythmn and co-ordination. I play guitar in bands as well so know about chords. I also did a jazz course for a year so learnt some basic theory. This is why I can learn using the sheet but takes me a along time. Have to write out inversions and piece the chords and melody together. Like I said learnt misty but that took like months
Ah yes, inversions come after you get really good at playing the chords in root position. If you struggle to build the chords in root, then inversions will be even trickier. If you know the root, then inversions just come as more of a necessity in ease of playing. :)
I can play most of the root chords but use the inversions to make some parts of songs easier , however you just haveto listen cause some inversions sound awful
Yes, so much of choosing inversions has to do ultimately with the sound, so it's a juggle between what's playable and what sounds better sometimes. :)
