30DAYS Music Challenge day 11: Oud en afgedankt, Marco Borsato (a song with a message)

in #music8 years ago

Today day 11 in the 30Day music challenge. This time a song with a hidden problem. This song is of the dutch singer Marco Borsato. He is a big artist in the Netherlands with (I think) some really good songs. In 1996 he made the album "De waarheid" wat means "The truth". I think that it is the best album he ever made, it was also the album what really ment his breaktrough in the Netherlands.

This song got a deeper meaning which pretty good describes a problem that not manny people know of. Dementia often caused by Altzheimer's disease. It is a disease which strikes mostly older people. They are getting problems with their memory (short term) and only reminding things of the past. I am generalizing it for the sake of this post. But mostly people with dementia will eventually forget everything that was precious to them, they can't remember their own family and things like that. It is heartbreaking...

My grandmother had a very bad form of dementia, she couldn't recognize anybody anymore. It is very sad to see...
From a woman in the middle of the world, her world became so small....heartbreaking...

This song descibes in a very impressive way how people with dementia or alzheimer must feel or are been treated...
The title is "Oud en afgedankt" which means something like "old and scrapped" . It gives an representation of how we (healthy family) are handling our family with dementia. Of course it's not the case in all situations, but it happens way to much.

I will try to translate the lyric's and post them later on, but just listen to the song... You get the atmosphere.

Thank you!!

Lyrics
Oud en afgedankt
In een straatje zonder bomen
Zit ze voor het raam
Door niemand serieus genomen

Oud en weggedaan
Zelfs door haar eigen zonen
Die met hun vrouw en kinderen
Vier straten verder wonen

Alleen met haar verjaardag
Dan komen ze nog aan
Maar vorig jaar toen zijn ze
Na een uur al weggegaan

Oud en afgedankt
In een flat met kleine ramen
Herkent hij de gezichten wel
Maar herinnert zich geen namen

En hij zou wel willen schreeuwen
Van de eenzaamheid en pijn
Zijn einde is zijn troost
Want dan zal alles anders zijn

Afhankelijk en eenzaam
Niet in de maatschappij
Rennen we in sneltreinvaart
Aan hem en haar voorbij

We denken niet aan later
En houden ze maar klein
Totdat we zelf ook oud
En heel erg eenzaam zullen zijn

Oud en afgedankt
Slijt hij zijn tijd met dromen
Het bezoekuur is voorbij
En ze zijn weer niet gekomen

Despite this sad message I do whish you all a great day !!!

Music is magic, music is emotion......

Great lyric might be it is what people with dementia think but I have doubts about that. They live in an other world, the world they were a little child. They simply do not recognize this world and the people in it any longer. It is scaring for sure, to them.

Absolutly right, people with dementia indeed won't think like that. It is more a metaphorish kind a thing to set people to think about it...

And if they might understand the loss might be only felt by them... but it is also a reason not to visit any longer since you are simply a scaring, confusing, unknown factor in their life

Also a case of Demenz in my Family (Father in law) still very light case but somehow shocking if someone from time to time is not even able to draw a clock (one of the tests to get financial support in Germany).
My mother in law is suffering a lot due to this - it cannot be belanced out with some money as really destroying her health but they and we still do not move them/him into an Altersheim as long as they are somehow still sefsufficient (we bring heavy food stuff, help with contracts... etc. every saturday, but we foresee that more needs to be done).

It can be hard and heavy. Although it's great to see you are supporting them with everything you can. But I can imagine when it evolves you need more help. all the best with that !!!
