That's true, I played in a band called "The Grit" , which only played own material. It was much harder to find venues where we could play. We more participated in all kinds of contests to get some exposure. I do think bassplayers are more in demand, just like drummers. The problem here in Zutphen is that there are mostly Heavy metal (and harder) bands. So you don't have lot to choose from :)
