I upvote posts I disagree with politically if the person writing them strikes me as intelligent. But I find too many people bitching about trolls as soon as they find themselves in conversation with someone that disagrees with them. I don't want to only talk to people who agree with me on everything. That's a circlejerk.
In general I upvote smart and reserve the down vote button for the worst kind of spam and stupidity.
