My Experience of Growing Saffron in Home Garden ( Project of 5 to 6 Month)

I have always been fond of agriculture, and this time I have experienced saffron seedling in my home garden. Saffron is a valuable and rare crop, which is usually grown in large fields or scals, but I decided to try it on a small scale. In this blog I have described in detail the stages of land preparation, buying saffron, planting and giving water, so that anyone who wants to grow saffron in the house can easily start their work. It's first week and in second or third week when I soften the soil I will share it again the next procedure.
1. Soil Preparation: Choosing of Soil suitable for saffron

Since I decided to put a saffron in the home garden, I had to pay special attention to the preparation of soil. Saffron is a delicate crop and needs a certain type of soil.
Right Soil Selection For saffron :
Sandy, fertile and light soil is excellent because it does not stand water and the roots find a suitable place to breathe.
Steps for Soil Preparation:
- Cleaning the Soil: First I removed herbs and stones from the garden's ground so that the cheese can find a clean and appropriate place.
- Soften the Soil: I dug the ground well with the help of a belt so that the soil becomes air and the bulb can be easily rooted.
- Adding fertilizer: In the soil for saffron organic fertilizer (cow dung fertilizer) to increase nutrition.
- Insuring Proper Drainage: I gave the ground a slight slope so that rain or more water can be easily drained and the roots do not damage.
After doing all this, the soil is ready to apply saffron seedlings (bulb)!
2. Experience of Buying and Selecting Saffron (bulb) Seedlings
Saffron BulbsThe next step after the preparation of the land was to buy good quality bulbs (seedlings). Since I did this, I took a limited number of saffron bulbs from an authentic agricultural nursery.
How to Buy Saffron Bulb
- I just bought healthy and large size bulbs because they develop better.
- To test the quality of the bulb, I pressed them by hand - those who were hard and strong, they were good.
- To avoid damaged or rotten bulbs, I just bought fresh and dry bulbs.
Preparation before Applying Saffron Bulb
- I kept the saffron bulb in a breeze and dry place for few hours, so that they were protected from moisture.
- Some farmers soak the bulb in light fungicide, but since I had to grow them at home garden, I left this step.

It was the most interesting moment because it was time to put saffron bulbs in the earth.
Digging Holes
- I Dug 5-10 cm deep for each bulb so that the roots can be frozen.
- Bulbs space 10 cm from each other at a distance to find the right place for development.
Planting Saffron's Bulbs
- Put a saffron bulb in each hole, the root part down and the tip up the top.
- Then covered with light clay and pressed gently so that the bulb would be stable in its place.

4. Method of Giving Water

The saffron crop does not need much water, so it was necessary to take caution in giving water.
- First Water:
- After applying bulbs, I gave light water so that the soil remains moist and roots start to fade quickly.
- Method of Gving Water Later:
- Giving more water can damage the bulbs, so I will give light water every third day.
- If there is a natural moisture in the soil, it is not necessary to give water.
Basic Water Method
✅ The ground is dry, then water should be given.
✅ Water is not high, so that the roots are not damaged.
✅ Water should be given in the morning or evening so that the vapors can be reduced and humidity is maintained.
Conclusion and my Experience
This was my first experience to grow saffron, and I learned a lot from it.
- Earth preparation and drainage is very important, otherwise the bulbs can be damaged.
- Bulb is good quality you can get the best results.
- Water Give in small quantities and carefully Saffron development is essential.
This experience was very successful, and I plan to grow saffron on a large scale by improving this technique in the future.
