I found a Convolvulus Hawk-moth in my garden
So I was playing a quick game of keepie-uppie in my garden yesterday evening when I came across this amazing Hawk-moth, lying upside down in the grass.
At first, I thought it was dead (perhaps because of the high temperatures we are experiencing here in the UK at the moment). But after giving it a little nudge, the little guy sprang to life and started crawling up my hand.
After checking the species online, I found out that it was a male Convolvulus Hawk-moth. An immigrant from Africa, some adults fly to Europe from June to August to breed. The offspring, which I expect this one is based on size, are those most commonly seen here in the UK (normally towards the south coast, where I live).
It's the first time that I've seen a Hawk-moth in the UK and only the second time that I've seen one in the wild at all (I have previously seen a Hawn-moth in the French Alps, closer to their winter hang-out in Africa).
Convolvulus Hawk-moths are nocturnal and rest by day, but this little guy seemed quite weak so I moved him to a shady spot and left a little water and diluted honey.
I checked back this morning and he had gone, so fingers crossed he had a successful night feeding.
