Amazing Nature #141 - Aye yesterday a strange ape
Aye yesterday a strange ape
Today I bring you a publication dedicated to perhaps one of the strangest primates in the world, its peculiar form a bit ugly within the canons of beauty imposed by man towards animals, is considered ugly by the majority, although it is little known if not among a select group that consumes its meat as an exotic dish and is hunted for marketing in the pet market, also if you ever wear gremlins sure say, oh it seems a lot! But come on, this animal is nothing aggressive is rather harmless and pleasant, I'm talking about the Aye aye. Come with me to know the main characteristics of this great species.
Its scientific name is Daubentonia madagascariensis and is a species endemic to the island of Madagascar where hundreds of years ago lived in the coastal areas of the island, but with human interaction, the devastation of its habitat adding its indiscriminate hunting has made the species migrate to other areas of the forests of Madagascar. The inhabitants abhor this species, and usually kill it without reason or to consume its meat, in addition, there are diverse myths and superstitions around the Aye aye, this species has a super developed hand with a bigger finger than all, the legend tells that that that Aye aye that points to someone with his long finger this destined to pass in hardships and bad luck. It is also known as Lemur of Madagascar.
Formerly inhabited lowlands of the island, but now lives in the high parts of forests where he spends his life in the top of trees, has developed a tree culture, but centuries ago was terrestrial, it is thought that this reason has brought major genetic problems by the change of habitat and food.
They are excellent builders, they are very famous for the nests they build in a particular way, they carefully select branches and leaves of certain trees, the aim is to build a species sphere which is resistant enough to resist rain or heat, the construction is done at more than 15 meters high in the top of the trees. It has only one hole to enter and exit. The compartment of this primate is totally nocturnal, in the day they are dedicated to rest and to groom among them.
Its average size is 40 centimeters quite small compared to other apes. Above all, because of their fur and their developed hands that have one finger longer than the other, their eyes have an incredible capacity to see in the darkest nights. Its maximum weight is 3.5 kilograms, there are records that this species of lemur can live up to 30 years in the wild.
There is a clear contrast between its small and short extremities in comparison with its hands with long fingers, whose third finger is longer than the rest, this one is used to introduce it in cavities in certain trees where insects live their main diet. According to the study, they have demonstrated that the finger is a sensitive appendage that can detect vibrations and increases of heat.
Their main diet is based on the consumption of a variety of insects, but in some seasons such as the rainy season, usually eat many fruits, to consume some insects your body suffers intoxications which resolve to eliminate thanks to fruit intake.
As for their reproduction, we can find that they do not have a specific date so they can mate and reproduce at any time of the year, only when there is mating is that there are fights between females to maintain territorial domain.
Currently, the species is in red alert of the danger of extinction due to the deterioration of its habitat as well as its indiscriminate hunting, it is estimated that about 2500 specimens remain and there are no projects to conserve this species much less to create reserves.
