Bad news friends :(

in #nature8 years ago (edited)

We checked on the sparrow family last night and this morning and everything was good. IMG_20180527_141705_hdr.jpg

Mid morning however I saw a much bigger bird swoop into the nest. It was a blue Jay and it flew to the creek and it looked like he gobbled something up. I knew that bluejays had their young raised by other birds by dumping said birds eggs out and replacing them with their own, but I did not realise they also killed the young.
I went and checked the nest and it was completely empty. I checked around the yard and near the creek in case one was dropped that I could save, but no luck.

Sad to be the bearer of bad news.

Maybe the sparrows flew away because they no longer needed the nest?

I meant to edit this post to link it to yesterday's post. The nest had four brand new babies yesterday, and we have been watching the parents getting ready for their arrival for a few days. Oh well. Such is life! I will edit this post now though.
