Observing the 'bird-like duck' is nature.
Identification and Physical Appearance
What we often refer to as a "bird-like duck" typically belongs to the Teal or Little Grebe species.
These birds are considerably smaller than common ducks. Their weight and length are comparable to that of a medium-sized bird.
Their plumage is typically brown, gray, or black, allowing them to blend in and remain camouflaged amidst the aquatic vegetation of their surroundings. Male birds often feature iridescent blue or green stripes on their wings that shimmer in the sunlight.
Their beaks are flat and short—specifically adapted for foraging in the mud. Their feet are webbed, enabling them to swim through the water with rocket-like speed and agility.
These birds are inherently very shy and vigilant.
They float very lightly upon the water's surface. The moment they sense any danger, they immediately dive underwater, resurfacing a considerable distance away.
Their primary diet consists of small aquatic insects, algae, aquatic plants, and small fish.
Unlike the familiar "quack-quack" sound of common ducks, their calls are quite melodious—resembling the chirping or whistling of a songbird.
