The cocklebur plant should be approximately 2 to 4 feet tall.
Its leaves are large, rough, and triangular in shape. The most distinctive feature of this plant is its fruit. The fruits are small, hard, and oval-shaped, covered on all sides by curved, hook-like spines.
This serves as an excellent example of seed dispersal in nature. Whenever an animal or human passes by this plant, these spiny fruits cling to their fur, clothing, or skin, thereby spreading far and wide. Interestingly, the invention of 'Velcro' was inspired by this very plant and its ability to stick to clothing.
Cocklebur poses a significant problem for farmers. It competes with crops for nutrients, water, and sunlight, leading to a reduction in crop yields.
Important Warning: This plant is highly toxic to both humans and livestock. Its seeds and young sprouts contain a dangerous toxin known as 'Carboxyatractyloside.' If livestock (such as cows, sheep, or horses) ingest it while grazing, it causes severe damage to their livers, which can even prove fatal.
