The lotus blooms in the mud despite the filth

Lotus is mostly found in shallow and muddy ponds or lakes. Its structure is remarkable: its large, round leaves float on the surface of the water. These leaves have a distinctive waxy coating that prevents water droplets from accumulating on them. Lotus flowers are typically pink and white, although the nilkamal (blue lotus) is also quite popular. This flower blooms with sunrise and its petals close at sunset.
Every part of the lotus is useful. Its roots, called 'kamal kakri' (lotus cucumber), are used as a vegetable. Its seeds (makhana) are very beneficial for health and are also used in rituals and sweets. In Ayurveda, lotus flowers are used in cooling medicines and cosmetics.
