To attract this bird to your garden or surroundings.
The Indian Grey Hornbill, also known as the Indian Grey Hornbill, is a very interesting and important bird found in India. It is mostly seen in open forests, urban gardens, and pristine areas across the Indian subcontinent. Its distinctive plumage and behavior distinguish it from other birds.
As its name suggests, this bird is mostly gray in color. Its most distinctive feature is its long, curved beak, topped with a black protrusion called a "casque." Its tail is long and has white and black markings at the tip.
The female incubates the eggs for several weeks. During this time, the male faithfully brings food to the female and later to the chicks through a small hole.
Its main food is the fruits (figs) of trees such as the peepal, banyan, and sycamore. They eat the fruits and spread their seeds far and wide, allowing new trees to grow and expanding the forest. They also prey on small insects and lizards. Deforestation due to urbanization is threatening their survival, as they require hollow, old trees to nest in. However, they are adept at adapting to human settlements, and their loud "keen-keen" calls can often be heard in parks in large cities.
