Non-existent yarn shops and a Christmas market

in #needleworkmonday4 years ago (edited)

What a day… I was prepared like a pro. Backpack, several bags, my current knitting project, an apple and a water bottle – what could possibly go wrong?

We decided in a fit of Christmas angst to visit a bigger neighbor town (Dortmund) to buy some Christmas presents, strolling over the Christmas market (with the reputedly biggest Christmas tree of the world) and to have a nice topic for my #needleworkmonday post, to explore all three yarn shops.

The beginning of this endeavor should have told me to instantly abandon all hope – the first yarn shop on my list was bankrupt. But you know me and my infatuation into all kinds of yarn, I persisted to research the other two shops. But first we walked purposefully through the city center only en passant noticing the Christmas market stalls, the wonderful lights and crazy rides, as we wanted to buy (or better: get inspired for) some Christmas presents.

This did not go too well. We seldom visit Dortmund, so I had no idea which shops to pay a visit and which parts of the town are most promising…. We ran more or less aimlessly through the city in search of something we still did not know. In one word: FUN 😱🤪

After drinking some coffee, I was in dire need of a bathroom and I must share the photo with you because the tiles matched my scarf (which is yellow and violet, not the most common colors for a bathroom in my view). Oh and by the way, I now need glasses 😱😱😱. On the other hand the passage where the cafe was located was very beautiful and had an unique retro chique.

Back on track we reached the next yarn shop – still without any Christmas presents – and oh joy, it is closed on Mondays. You can imagine my mood. I was boiling. And I guess because of this bad mood I forgot on our way back to the car to visit the third shop…

Back in our car I was silently grumbling. To be honest, I guess it was not so silently as I imagine, because my husband suggested to visit a mall on our way home which has another beautiful shop. Its Veritas, a Belgian shop which offers yarn, fabric, haberdashery and strangely underwear, raincoats and fashion jewelry. Did I mention that I love this shop? They always have beautiful pattern magazines which you get for free if you buy something (and they are so sweet to give you several copies for your sewing/knitting/crocheting friends)
By now you are imagining what happened: the shop closed 😱😱😱 Instead there was a trinket shop you find in every town. So sad 😭

After recovering from this loss, I turned around about 90 degrees and spotted a for me unknown Danish shop which displayed beautiful little things in wood and clay; pillows, sweets and notebooks etc.

Still grieving we went inside and tada: they had wool. But don’t celebrate, it was a meagre yield. I bought something which I cannot name as certain knitting friends could read this post. Nevertheless, I posed in front of the shelves to have a license to post this on #needleworkmonday 😂😂😂
To have a perfect closure for this day, we noticed on our way home, that we did not had a single look at this famous huge Christmas tree.

You made me chuckle 😊
I'm on my holidays now. I hope you have a wonderful peaceful midwinter festival and I look forward to our conversations in 2020 x

Thank you for your lovely wishes. I also hope you have a wonderful, healthy and joyfilled time. And I hope to excessively talk about fabric, yarn and art with you next year 😍🌈

The coffee shop bathroom definitely matched your scarf! And the whole area looked fascinating to explore. It is really too bad that the stores were out of business or closed!
I had hoped to get into a store during our weekend trip but it too was not open on Mondays. And closed due to a family emergency on Sunday. No luck for either of us this weekend!

I hope you will have another opportunity for yarn shopping. I would have loved to see the shops n Dortmund, but honestly after Christmas I am happy to not do any shopping... I have so many ideas for knitting and sewing and I would love to go hiking with my husband. I hope we will find time for this.
And the bathroom... very strange. I could not take photos inside of the cabins. They were super dark in this deep violet. I found this a stylish color scheme, but really unusual.

I have picked your post for my daily voting initiative! Keep it up and Steem on!

Thank you so much for the support <3 <3

Peru has also closed several stalls for Christmas. Although the yarn shops are still open, it seems that people weave at all times of the year, as there are threads and wools for each season.

Strange... you would imagine that especially before CHristmas people would buy more things especially yarn (here it is cold right now which normally brings more people to knitting) But good that near you there is such a deep tradition in weaving. Weaving is super seldom in Germany, here are more knitters :-D
If you ever are in the mood to write about yarn shops and wool in Peru: I would love this.

The world of tissue itself is enormous.
Everything about amigurumis is new. The 100% cotton yarn industry was forgotten for decades...and now it seems to be coming back.

On wools there are infinities of textures and colors, especially for those who weave two sticks. My respects...About that I will learn soon (I hope). For now I am with the amigurumis.

And I so admire amigurumi,. I love all cute things and amigurumi is in my eyes always super cute. But I do not have the patience for such small items and all the counting....
