Death Toll Hits 1,355 on Day 13 as Nepal Marks a National Day of Mourning

Monday is the thirteenth day. Flags are at half-mast. The Foreign Ministry’s 2 p.m. sheet and NDRRMA’s Monday count put the recovered dead at 1,355. There was no fifth live rescue overnight.

Sunday morning was 1,341. Monday is 1,355. The missing total barely moved. That is the shape of week two: more remains from the downstream banks, almost no new names returned to families.
On the Tibet / Gyirong side, Chinese figures cited this weekend were about 43 dead and 519 missing. Combined, the disaster is near 1,400 confirmed dead.
The four who came out alive
The Foreign Ministry listed the live finds of the last four days in one paragraph, so they are not forgotten in the mourning arithmetic:
- Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan — Upper Trishuli-3A, 4 September
- Lu Haitao — Upper Trishuli-1, Audit Tunnel 4, 5 September
- Chandika Kumari Shrestha — fourth floor, Betrawati, 5 September
No new living person was pulled from a tunnel on Sunday or Monday. Search at Langtang Khola hydropower has been called off. Work continues at Chilime, Trishuli-1 and other blocked passages. Hundreds of hydropower workers remain on the missing lists.
Rasuwa’s own damage sheet
The District Administration’s first damage note is now public:
- 1,500 private houses gone
- 28 government and public buildings
- 8 community schools and 3 private schools
- 14 bank and finance offices
- 41 km of road
- 6 concrete bridges, 8 Bailey / truss bridges, 10 suspension bridges
- 8 hydropower projects listed as completely damaged, including Rasuwagadhi (111 MW), Upper Trishuli-1 (216 MW), Trishuli-3A (60 MW), Chilime, Langtang Khola, Mailung, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli-3B
Rasuwa’s local unaccounted list is still above 3,000. That includes security staff, bank workers, residents and visitors. One hundred and forty-five people stranded toward Gosainkunda were airlifted out earlier.
The Army is putting a Bailey bridge over the Tadi at Devighat. That is how goods will move until the Krishnabhir cut on the Prithvi Highway is fixed.
The cabinet line on cash: Rs 10 million each to Rasuwa and Nuwakot, Rs 5 million to Dhading, Rs 135 million across 15 affected local governments. That is immediate district money, not the reconstruction bill.
Identification is now the bottleneck
Most recovered bodies were carried far downstream, sat in water and mud, or arrived as parts. DNA matching has started. Until those matches land, the official dead and the official missing will keep sitting side by side. Families who cannot wait are still performing symbolic rites.
What Monday changes
Yesterday the sheet said 1,341 and two Saturday survivors were in hospital.
Today the sheet says 1,355, the state is in mourning, Langtang Khola’s tunnel search is over, and the missing number is still about five thousand.
Four people walked out of the dark last week. The thirteenth day is for the ones who did not.
