AFP, working from the disaster agency the same cycle, put recovered bodies at 1,403 and named dead at 105. Tibet / Gyirong is unchanged in Chinese state media: 43 dead, 519 missing.
Treat the jump in “missing” with care. This series has carried NDRRMA near 5,170–5,200 and a tighter Police book near 4,089. A 6,150 line is a different consolidation, not proof that a thousand new people vanished overnight. What did not jump is identification.
Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava said five sets of remains came out of the Chilime powerhouse tunnel on Wednesday after Indian and Nepali crews finished days of slush. Recovery, not a fifth live pull.
The first study: climate as precondition, not as a slogan
World Weather Attribution, published 16–17 September and reported by the Guardian, New York Times, BBC and Reuters:
- A slab of hanging glacier and rock about 200,000 square metres left Langtang Lirung.

- Freezing line up about 100 metres per decade since the 1980s; permafrost thaw and thinning ice taking the glue off a slope that already had geology and, possibly, a memory of 2015.
Friederike Otto, Imperial College: there is “absolutely no doubt that human-induced climate change played a role here in the preconditioning of the disaster.”
Manjeet Dhakal, Climate Analytics: a “very strong linkage” — language written for the Loss and Damage file, not for a slogan board.
The study does not say “emissions pulled the glacier down at 8:37 a.m.” It says the mountain was already warmer, wetter, and less frozen than the world that built Rasuwagadhi. That is the sentence Prime Minister Shah can take to the General Assembly on 24 September. The Fund’s cap is still about $20 million. Rebuild is still $4.78–5 billion.
A separate Himalayan paper this month used another phrase: glacier bankruptcy — peak meltwater, then decline, for rivers that two billion people drink from. Rasuwa is the flash. The slow ledger is the rivers after the ice is gone.
What China said about water that has not finished falling
This is not a new Thursday quote. It is the warning that never left the corridor.
Late August, China’s Ministry of Water Resources named a barrier lake at the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo, upstream of Gyirong: on the order of 2–2.5 million cubic metres, with another 3 million possible in days, “high risk of breach.” Rescue teams on the Chinese side pulled back, then went back when overflow was called manageable. By 29 August the Purepu surface had shrunk (Reuters: about 99,000 sq m). Engineers separately flagged a larger pond at the foot of the collapse, estimated over 120,000 square metres, depth unknown. A Nepali disaster official said flood risk remains until both lakes are gone.
Of the 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes catalogued in the basins that drain into Nepal, reporting after the flood put 25 inside Chinese territory — lakes Kathmandu cannot fly a drone over without Beijing. The May 2026 data-sharing talks did not produce a signed real-time pact before 26 August.
Energy Minister Shrestha’s line last weekend still stands on the Nepali side: study high lakes, lower them, even discuss controlled blasting of outlets. Scientists answering that plan say four named lakes (Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, Hongu-2) are not the whole list, and August 26 was an ice-rock avalanche plus a debris dam, not a textbook drain of one of those four.
China’s remaining ice and ponds are the upstream half of the same sentence. Banks of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli are still not a place to camp.
Samagaun will not eat until the cameras fly
Samagaun, Chumnubri-1, Gorkha — the big village under Manaslu, not Rasuwa, but the same warming line.
Youth leader Dawa Norbu Lama has called an indefinite hunger strike at Manaslu Base Camp from 18 September to 4 October. An eight-point note went to the Gorkha CDO, the ward chair, the Manaslu Conservation Area Project and the local police post.
They want aerial checks on:
- new lakes at the foot of Manaslu (Pungen)
- Birendra Lake
- Kal Tal
- the lake at Ghunsarphuk
- three large high-risk lakes at Nyochuthan
- others in the Manaslu and Chum valleys
They say several new glacial lakes appeared this year. They want settlement protection before a stronger El Niño talk for 2027. Lama said he starts alone; others have said they will join.
This is not theatre imported from Kathmandu. It is the next valley telling the state that Rasuwa was the first receipt, not the last.
What Thursday changes
Yesterday: 1,399, 7 percent named, 607 foreign tourists on the tourism book.
Today: Police 1,404; a missing figure that may have been rebuilt; five more bodies from Chilime; a WWA paper that gives Shah evidence instead of adjectives; and boys in Samagaun who will sit in the snow until someone inspects the water still perched above Gorkha.
