Solana Raises $166,946 for Nepal Flood Relief as the Death Toll Reaches 1,252

On 2 September the official Solana account posted a simple line:
$166,946.50 raised for Nepal flood relief.
Thank you to everyone that took part.
Your logos will be up on our pfp and pinned post for the next week.
That is not a government pledge. It is a 24-hour on-chain auction of nine advertising squares on Solana’s own X profile picture. The money is supposed to reach Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
On the same morning NDRRMA said the recovered-body count had risen again, to 1,252.
How the Solana auction worked
Solana and the art platform Mallow split the official logo into nine zones. Brands bid in USDC at nepal.mallow.art. The window lasted about a day. Every dollar of the winning bids was promised to relief, not to Solana.

Mallow’s co-founder said the build took 48 hours and the raise took 24. The published route is: convert the USDC, send it to Engage Nepal (a U.S. 501(c)(3) linked to former U.S. Ambassador Scott DeLisi), then onward to the official government fund at pmdrf.nchl.com.np. Solana and Mallow said they would publish the donation transaction.
That last step matters. Crypto relief is only useful if the on-chain receipt and the government receipt can be matched. Watch for that hash.
This is not the only crypto money in the disaster. Ripple earlier pledged $300,000 to World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps for food, water and sanitation in Nepal and Tibet. A separate community token is also routing fees toward Engage Nepal. Those are different pipes. They should not be added together as if they were one cheque.

Most of the dead are still being found far below Rasuwa. Identification is slow. Hundreds of families in Kathmandu queued this week to give DNA samples. Others have started symbolic funerals with kusha-grass bodies because they cannot wait for a name.
The tunnel story has not broken. Joint Nepal–India–China–Korea teams are still in the hydropower passages. They have gone tens or hundreds of metres in. They have found mud, not a new list of survivors. Prime Minister Shah told Parliament the silt is too deep for machines or men to stand in. Some experts have disputed the idea that “no country” has this skill. Either way, this is still a digging day, not a breakthrough day.
Why $167,000 is both large and small
Kathmandu’s reconstruction talk is in the $4–5 billion range. The UN Loss and Damage Fund, if it pays Nepal at all, may offer something closer to $5–20 million. State-to-state aid and the $42 million already announced sit in another column.
So a public blockchain auction that raised $166,946.50 in one day will not rebuild Rasuwagadhi, the Friendship Bridge, or the ruined plants. It can still do three useful things:
- Put hard currency into the official relief fund without a six-month grant cycle.
- Show a global crypto audience the flood as a live emergency, not a distant headline.
- Create a public paper trail, if the promised transaction is posted.
It cannot replace climate compensation, Bailey bridges, or a working early-warning system. Treat it as one more pipe, not as the answer to “who pays?”

What this update changes
The last field report put the count at 1,204, with Kathmandu taking the climate bill abroad.
This morning the count is 1,252, families are giving blood for DNA, and a major blockchain sold nine squares of its own face for a week to send money toward the Prime Minister’s fund.
The mountain is still closed. The tunnels are still full of silt. The missing list is still longer than the recovered list. A profile picture will not change that. A transparent transfer into the official fund is still better than silence.
