New life in Christ: Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Ephesians 4:22
The Epistle to the Ephesians is a letter attributed to Paul and addressed to several churches in Asia Minor, and in this letter, the apostle to the Gentiles wrote about the importance of salvation in Christ. A grace that the apostle explained is the fruit of God's eternal love, because the Lord is not a God of the dead but of the living.
And this spiritual salvation, which Paul witnessed through his conversion, means nothing unless it produces a concrete change in believers, the author of the epistle explained. Knowing the grace of Christ, then, means living out the gifts received, Paul explained. This is why Paul wrote with wisdom about the action of the Holy Spirit in the new believers: "However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ" Ephesians 4:7.
And this spiritual change, the acceptance of Christ as savior through the sacrament of baptism, is what causes the "old man" to die and the "new man" to be born. Justice is useless, virtue is useless, the commandments are useless in achieving blessedness, and this is the problem of the "old man," because for this man, "error" is a habit, a custom. Only when men live the gifts inherited from above do true changes occur, and it is here that the new man united to the faith appears.
This is why the apostle Paul wrote about the need for change; the carnal mindset must give way to the spiritual mindset, and with these words, Paul taught this spiritual truth: "Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes" Ephesians 4:22-23.
Carnal desires only produce suffering because goods like money are scarce, and this creates an irresolvable conflict among men, small private wars give rise to public wars between countries. But spiritual goods such as mercy are infinite, and so when shared, they are not exhausted, and communion arises, the ethical social order, with Christ as head. The new life in Christ is therefore essential for the life of men, and those who reject it can only expect misfortune.
