A Step Toward Modern Currency

The new one-rial polymer banknote issued by the Central Bank of Oman represents an important milestone in the history of the country’s currency. This note has been developed with a special focus on durability and modern security features.

The complete details of this new banknote are as follows:

  1. Date of Issue and Availability
The Central Bank has announced that this new polymer banknote will be available for public transactions and in banks starting from 12 January 2026. It will circulate alongside the existing paper banknotes.

  2. Advantages of Polymer Material
Compared to traditional paper banknotes, polymer (plastic) notes offer several benefits:

Longer lifespan: These notes last three to four times longer than paper notes.

Cleanliness: They are resistant to moisture, sweat, and dirt, and are easy to clean.

Environmentally friendly: Once worn out, they can be recycled into other plastic products.

  1. Design and Appearance

Color: The primary colors have been kept similar to the traditional one-rial note to make it easily recognizable to the public.

Motifs: The note features symbols reflecting Oman’s culture, history, and modern development. It typically includes an image of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq along with important architectural landmarks or natural landscapes of Oman.

  1. Security Features
To prevent counterfeiting, highly advanced technology has been used, including:

Transparent window: A clear section in the note containing intricate designs or a hologram.

Color-shifting ink: Certain elements change color when viewed from different angles.

Raised printing: Special raised markings are included to help visually impaired individuals identify the denomination by touch.

  1. Status of Old Banknotes
It should be noted that the introduction of the new polymer note does not mean the immediate withdrawal of the old paper notes. Existing one-rial paper banknotes will continue to be legal tender until the Central Bank officially announces their gradual withdrawal from circulation.
