New laws stop double taxation on Bitcoin.

The Australian reports that digital currencies bought by Australians will no longer be liable for GST from July 1 2018 following a change to tax law on Thursday. Under the old rules, crypto-currencies could effectively be taxed twice - first when they bought the electronic money, and again if they used it on items subject to the GST. Under the new laws Bitcoin will get the same GST treatment as foreign currency after new laws to stop double taxation cleared parliament.

Tony Abbott headbutting charge against Hobart DJ Astro Labe upgraded.

The ABC reports that a charge against the Hobart DJ accused of headbutting former prime minister Tony Abbott has been upgraded to one that carries a 10-year jail term. DJ Astro Labe, 38, was charged with common assault after a September 21 incident with Tony Abbott on Hobart's waterfront. The charge has now been amended to causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Mr Labe appeared briefly in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday morning and the ABC reports that he did not enter a plea and his bail was continued. Mr Labe denies that this attack had anything to do with the same sex marriage survey vote.

Turnball says that NBN Co is a 'calamitous train wreck' that may never make a profit.

The ABC reports that Mr Turnbull was questioned about the NBN this morning after Four Corners reported the troubled rollout was creating a digital divide across Australia, with some households with older technology such as copper phone wire and pay TV cables, and unable to access the high speeds they are paying for. It has been revealed that the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman had an almost 160 per cent increase in NBN complaints over the past financial year. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has admitted it this morning that it was a "big mistake" to set up a new company to build the National Broadband Network, adding that Labor left the Coalition a "calamitous train wreck" but taking no responsibility for his actions as Communications Minister.
