I don't think the hacker kids want to create distrust and paranoia, just perhaps to highlight a vulnerability.

No it has nothing to do with the kids.

The system is easy to hack - hence, a 10 y/o can do it
The system does not touch actual voting mechanisms, but can be manipulated to report something that is not true.
