Way to heaven - A 22nd century space elevator?
Arthur C. Clarke., famous for being the "2001: A Space Odyssey" movie screenplay co-writer, in his great novel “The Fountains of Paradise”, described the construction of a space elevator for the transports of people and goods from the surface of the Earth to a satellite in geostationary orbit at the height of approximately 36,000 kilometers (around 22,300 miles), without the use of rockets.
Well, almost 40 years after the publication of the novel, it seems that Arthur C Clarke’s concept of a space elevator was not meant to remain just an intriguing science-fiction idea. By this month the Japanese “Shizuoka” University and contractor Obayashi aim to start experiments for the realization of a first space elevator.
