Warframe Eliminate Microtransaction Due to Negative Impact On Players
In one of Warframe's popular third-person shooter game titles, the Digital Extremes developers discussed their experience after building a multiplayer-based free-to-play game since 2013. Of the many interesting stories submitted, the developers finally realized that players who spend money on Microtransaction in this game is considered too excessive. This case has even helped the developers realize that so far they have developed the concept of a gambling machine that is not suited to the purpose of Warframe.
From a recent excerpt of documentary episode Danny O Dwyer who interviewed several Warframe staff, studio manager Sheldon Carter explained how the economic system in this game was actually designed. So here they want the players to have the motivation to continue to grind and get the desired gear. In order not to make players bored, each grinding activity offers a series of exciting activities and lots of variety of items to acquire. But this goal did not meet their expectations because of the negative effect of Microtransaction.
This influence is first felt after the virtual pets feature (the animal fellow who can help you in completing the mission) was first introduced in the Warframe. Through this feature, players can pay platinum currency is quite expensive just to get a choice of pet modifications. Because the mechanism is not much different from the gambling machine and many players continue to use it without thinking, eventually Carter and the team of developers decided to immediately eliminate it.
Although this Microtransaction system can greatly benefit Warframe revenue as a free-to-play game, it seems that Digital Extremes has proven a highly acclaimed sense of responsibility as a developer. It can also be an example for all other game developers, if the gaming experience that gamers satisfy will always be a top priority of mere profit.
