Waymo takes another step towards having a self-driving car service
Last year Waymo (Alphabet/Google's self driving car company) started offering car rides in autonomous cars that didn't have a safety driver in Phoenix, AZ. These rides were available to a small group of beta testers and were free. On January 24th, the Arizona State Department of Transportation gave Waymo a permit to operate as a Transportation network company (TNC). Being a TNC allows Waymo to start charging for the rides it provides. In an emailed statement to Quartz, Waymo said "we’re taking all the steps necessary to launch our commercial service this year".
