What's up guys, today I will be discussing about the Nigeria culture, although there are different cultures in Nigeria. I do not really know so much about some, but I have a few ones which I know pretty much about. In this article, I will be discussing about a proverb from the Yoruba language, I intend starting off with this language because I pretty know much about it and I've lived in the Yoruba land for some years.

Later on, I will definitely expand to other languages such as Igbo, Hausa etc. Literally, these three are the major languages in Nigeria. So, maybe I might build more upcoming articles around them, but as I study more about other cultures and languages in Nigeria, I won't hesitate to share and discuss more about them.

In this article, I worked on a particular proverb of the Yoruba language/culture. The proverb when said, indicates a sign of warning or persuasion of someone to reveal his/her issues or problems.

Below is the Yoruba proverb for the day:

Proverb:
Ọ̀rọ̀ tí a ní kí babá má gbọ̀ọ́, baba ni yóò paríi rẹ̀.

Learn the pronunciation here:

Translation:
The matter which we are preventing the Head of the Family from hearing about will, in the end, be settled by him.

Meaning:
In the Nigerian traditional family setting, especially in the polygamous families, a lot of petty matters of quarrel and dispute do arise often. The younger ones and women who know about such cases usually try to hide them from the Head of the Family.

However, many times the matter gets out of hand and it becomes unavoidable to invite the Head of the Family to settle it. This will be the case if the matter is likely to affect the Head in the long run.

It may be the misbehaviour of a child, a quarrel between two wives, or misappropriation of family funds.

The proverb is also used to warn anybody to stop hiding his problems from the person who is very likely to be of help in solving the problem.

I hope you have learnt something from this article concerning the Yoruba culture? If you like what you see and would love to see more, then vote and follow me for more updates.

Thanks...
