Role Transitions We Don’t Recognize Until Later
Daybook December 4
Sometimes, nurses step into a new role before they feel ready.
A clinical educator, a preceptor, a mentor —
these roles often begin with uncertainty, not confidence.
A nurse in a hospital once stepped into a new role during a severe OR staffing shortage.
She became a clinical educator, though she wasn’t sure it was the right decision.
One day, she walked into the OR to check things out and tripped on some tubing.
Trying to lighten the moment, she joked with a nurse who had joined the perioperative program:
“I know you're not fond of me, but don’t try to hurt me!”
The nurse suddenly became serious and replied:
“Not like you? If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here.”
That moment changed everything.
Her uncertain decision, her doubt, her hesitation —
all of it became meaningful through one honest sentence.
One Line for Nurses and Nursing Students Today:
Sometimes we cannot see the value of our choices until someone reflects it back to us.
