I, myself, OK GO
[About education at the intersection of art and technology]
I am certainly a kind of person who is curious about technology. I first noticed OK GO after watching a music video ‘a Million Ways’ a.k.a. the backyard dancing. Then I remember that OK GO became famous in 2006, taking a low-budget music video ‘Here here goes again’ in a room decorated with cooking foil. When I saw the guys running on the threadmil with perfect timing in one-shot take MV, I wanted to cheer them up. By the way, OK GO has been shooting music those videos for 12 years, using Goldberg devices, printers, drones and electric motorbikes. Now their identity is not in a low-budget MV, but in the surprise moment for people with technical experiments every time.
Like OK GO, I, as an educator, are somehow out of place. From the winter of 2015 to the spring of 2017, the evaluation of other textbook authors was 'too far ahead'. I realized that amateurism is within me, when something does not fit clearly. So when I first taught students gifted in visual art in 2012, the first thing I did was to showe them OK GO's 'This Too Shall Pass' music video. It took 6 months MIT engineers and OK GO together to made that video.
In fact, the moment I introduced OK GO to my kids in the classroom, it was one of the moments when I was thankful for my job as a teacher. I chose the music video because it was a classroom that I had been thinking about, At that time, I had my own aha-moment on the nature of art classes and myself as an educator. Of course, around 2006, when I said OK GO I liked them around, they said they were strange, not good, not good at singing. But 10 years later, music videos(subculture) are accepted as good educational materials.
In my opinion, those changes are related with the fast development of technologies. Numerous remarkable new technologies are announced over a night. Some kind of ‘attitude’ is needed, even math and physics haters. That is the sweetest spot of OK GO. They use the technology in casual attitude, with team project process, and they are not afraid to translate the theory into the practice. It seems to be the nice time to introduce them as a creative STEAM group.
Recently, “OK GO Sandbox” is announced by Playful Learning Lab. So, it turned out that OK GO is not my own lover. I feel like someone told me that I have some kind of insight. :)

We have a new thing! OK Go to teamed up with the Playful Learning Lab to make https://t.co/GIc6BkEZfx. It's a lovely website (thank you BustOut!) Full of resources for teachers who use our videos in class. If you do not already teach, maybe ... https://t.co/dQiQMXPcLq https://t.co/YL3BgK08zP
그래서인지 2012년에 처음 미술영재들을 가르치게 되었을 때 첫 시간에 제일 먼저 보여준 것이 OK GO의 This Too Shall Pass 뮤직비디오였다.
이번에 Playful Learning Lab에서 OK GO Sandbox를 보니 OK GO는 나만의 연인이 아니었던 것으로 판명이 됐군.
