Oklahoma Ice
While our winter has been lacking in precipitation so far, Mother Nature has decided we needed all of it in one go!
On days like this, I tend to drive on dirt/gravel roads. While slower, there is not as much accumulation of ice as on the asphalt roads.
The back roads have their own special beauty and the chances of getting into a serious wreck are much lower
One more day of ice/snow/sleet and it'll be time to start planting potatoes!
UPDATE:
1.3 inches of rain
In our area, some back roads don't seem to get any service at all and it's up to the locals to keep the roads clear and driveable. We were house sitting for some neighbours last year and nearly got high centered in our old Jeep from all the snow.
You're definitely right about the back roads having their own special beauty though. There is plenty of stunning landscapes hidden away for the locals to enjoy peacefully. -Aimee
We seem to be right on the edge of the ice. Got a bit yesterday but none last night. All the schools are closed around here.
We're expecting more freezing rain to start around 5 pm.
Hopefully the power poles and lines will hold. While electricity isnt an absolute necessity, I kinna like having it around!
I envy you! We're hoping to make the shift to off the grid living. Now is study time and looking for land time. I consider many out there my teachers, living proof. Cheers. It's been a wet winter here, just as the Farmer's Almanac predicted. Unseasonably above average temperatures after the arctic vortex around the new year. By the way, have you ever read The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka? I'm just delving into his ideas now. Fascinating. Here's a link: http://www.onestrawrevolution.net/One_Straw_Revolution/Massanobu_Fukuoka.html
Master Fukuoka definately had it going on.
It wasn't uncommon for him to set regional yield records for rice production AND get a harvest of barley off the same land.
His insights concerning trees are quite educational.
We had several really cold weeks this year which hasn't been the case for several years but we lack any frozen precipitation this year. We live just across the border in Arkansas. Happy homesteading and stay safe!
Looks like most of the ice will be gone by sunrise!
Hopefully planting potatoes by noon Saturday!
Great news on the ice! Good luck with the potatoes, we put our potatoes in just before all the rain.
