Journaling and Doodling with Fractals

in #oldtimers7 years ago

I haven’t been in the mood to write much recently in part because of everything that has been going on. The air around here has been thick with smoke from fires in Canada and closer by. It is clearing out a bit now but everything is still a bit hazy, smelly, and golden looking.

Apparently the peat bog is burning in Greenland too. This stuff has been collecting for thousands of years and now it has dried out enough to light on fire.

Sometimes I’ve been reluctant to say anything negative or complain too much. If you can’t say anything nice why say anything right?

Jet stream patterns are continuing to get more abnormal with them crossing the equator consistently now.

Lots of saber rattling is going on with tensions mounting all over. Starvation, war, pestilence, what’s the world coming to?

Some estimates put us at half a billion people as a sustainable population with business as usual. We’re burning through our resources now at an enormous rate. Populations of many species are going extinct or in decline. Most people don’t seem to view these things as a warning sign - this is what is particularly bothering me.

We have obvious technical solutions to most of these problems, we could be carbon neutral now with existing technologies. We could be putting more funding into better solutions and using renewable resources.

Instead it seems like were stuck in endless debates over minutia and thoughts around how much of this is human caused, and whether things will be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for the economy. If history repeats, we may still be arguing about these things thirty years later.

I’m afraid it may take some major ‘wake up call’ like a four or five times spike in food prices from major shortages of oil, water, and habitat, for the world to wake up to the point where some practical effort is made to do things differently.

I hope it doesn’t come down to that. The future actually looks very hopeful with electric vehicles, cleaner technologies and self driving cars close to major adoption. New technologies in farming could greatly reduce the chance of crop failure and support the biosphere. Many cool things could be done if we can learn to cooperate.

Fractals

Anyhow, I digress. I can’t solve the worlds problems, even if I was dictator. Oh, that’s an idea! Why not have a country wide random lottery and elect a new ‘Dictator for the Day’ each day as president? That way we could all spread out the strange presidential policies. It might be good though, to make it so that the ‘Commander in Chief’ couldn't launch a nuke like some battle hardened pirate from the good old days. ;)

I_R is calling me again! I’m afraid to answer; this can’t be good. I’m sure the IRS is surrounding my house right now with armed commandos. I probably just need to pay some major value in Bitcoin to make them go away. (For those of you that don’t know, hackers disguise themselves as the IRS and demand ransoms around here.) Hey, I’m just a cynical old man, why can’t these hackers just leave me alone? LOL.

I really need to stop reading the news and get a new land based phone number but like some strange addiction I can seem to break away from trying to figure out what the heck is going on around here and I enjoy my phone number - dang it. :(

Okay, enough digression, without further ado here’s my recent fractal doodling. It helps me a bit to play around with graphics programs to improve my outlook. I’ve merged some images together and modified them a bit in GIMP. The main output is from Mandelbulber. The partially viewed picture was taken by me with my Galaxy S7.

Artificial Flan Growth

And here’s a more traditionally colored version with the randomly generated fractal colors look. Sticking to strict fractal picture traditions, no use of photography was used. Yes, you heard that right, amazingly these are just the pixels as they came out of the fractal programs... Well, sort of. Actually, not really, but never the less, no paintbrushes, photos, or actual ink was used. (Do Wacom tablets count as a paint brush?)

Anyway, please enjoy the almost traditionally generated fractal:

Fire and Ice

One of these days I’ll have to get out my old DOS based fractal software and see if I can get it to run on an emulator just for fun. Or maybe not – it is probably lost in a storage bin somewhere or given away to Goodwill by this time.

Thanks for reading! I aways appreciate your support

The top half of the top one seems to be Native American Indian inspired, the bottom half reminds me of dessert and roses...
I think a while back I told you of a guy that did fractals nicely. Well he finally joined and is @woodywood143 I like he tells which software he uses and I think they are free.

Cool! I know I like to kind of collage images together sometimes. I've been thinking about getting more into 3D graphics again and taking a look at using some of the fractal images in 3D rendering programs. It is a lot of fun to get into it more in depth but I've been kind of doing many other things too and getting distracted. There is lots of free graphics software out there to get familiar with. It sure is fun to see the other types of things that people are doing and learn from them.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one ...

I figure we're due up for about 7 years worth of wake-up.

Time will tell.

I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who uses machine generated art like a meditative coloring book.

I thanks for the feedback, it is nice to know others are on the same page.

I figure the next few years are going to be increasingly interesting. Electric vehicles have so many fewer moving parts and other advantages - they are quickly being adopted and things are changing. Like you said, time will tell.

Yes plus my daughter is learning to drive. Hopefully we won't have to do the parallel parking!!

My son is doing the same now. Hopefully electric self driving fleet vehicles will take over soon and lower the cost of getting places to the point where it is no longer needed to drive or have your own vehicle. I have plans for my garage, I'd like to make it into a winter exercise room.

What a mix of beautiful text mixing art, economics and climate. Fractals are really really beautiful and soothing, dear brother.

Thank you dear brother. My posts sometimes do mix a bunch of subjects. I find it kind of fun to write that way; I hope it does not get too difficult to follow. I mostly like to write about whats currently on my mind and recently happening.

Good post
I like to read it

Thanks, I like your posts and photography too.

These worries often perturb me too. Glad to know I'm not alone and was even happier t see the fractal. I liked the second more. Looked like a butterfly and some algae dancing together haha. Was waiting for your post since the past few days so happy to read this one :)

Thanks! Nice feedback on things, it is nice to know people are enjoying the writing and pictures. I'm glad I'm not alone in these thoughts - it is encouraging to me to think that we can all work together to find solutions.

I can see the butterfly and algae dancing too. It is interesting that I was thinking of using a pond under the fractal as part of the background too.

I hope it gets better in your area @lightsplasher
Smoke from forest fire last for weeks.
The world is on delicate balance from nature to political arena and always on its tipping point to destruction.
Nice experiment on your fractals keep it up. I am also experimenting a little artwork myself.

Thanks! The smoke is clearing more and it is cooling off a bit here. I'm feeling more positive too. It is fun to keep trying to improve on the artwork and learn new techniques.

I am watching the late painter Bob Ross's videos. :)
Now I miss him.

Bob Ross had such a nice presence. I never watched him much when I was younger but I appreciate him so much more now.

Digital painting is somewhat fun too. We can make a detailed work if we are keen on perfection.

So many of us feel that the weight of the world's problems is more than we can bear. We see all the things that are happening and have the sense that what we 'see' may only be the tip of the iceburg. It's imperative that we don't become negative though, and so at times, we do have to 'walk away' from it.

Like you say, we can improve our outlook by doing something creative, something that we will enjoy doing and that others may also receive something from.

Love these images @lightsplasher. They make one expand ~ A worthwhile thing to give to others.

I'm reminded of Margaret Mead's oft quoted: Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have. ⚖️♡⚖️

Thank you for your wonderful comment. It sure helps to do some creative things at times or go for a long bike ride or walk if I can. I'm glad you loved the images. So much of your work is such a pleasure as well.

Pleasure. Yes, physical activity is great for coming back in touch with ourselves: Not just physically but emotionally, mentally and on all levels. I really appreciate having your support of my 'work' too @lightsplasher. Have a wonderful week. ⚖️♡⚖️

Big house, big yard, 2-3 cars, a new iPhone every year, plastic bags and bottles and packaging and all that commuting....yeah half a billion might be a sustainable amount.

But I'm happy to use public transportation if it is convenient enough, and I'm ok with a new phone whenever my old one breaks. I like riding a bicycle. A normal house with a small yard might be better than a rented apartment but one step at a time.

I love your fractals. Post more!

I'm really hoping to see some big changes in a positive way over the next three years. Fleets of self driving electric vehicles would do wonders for improving public transportation and many other issues.

Thanks! I will work on some more fractals soon.
