Broken gear wires do happen on bigger boats as well, often with much worse consequences. I have maybe 13 tons of mass that I sometimes need to navigate in tight harbors with lots of very expensive boats around. The collateral damage may be great if the gear wire breaks. According to the laws of the sea, I'm not economically responsible for such collateral damages, meaning my insurance company wouldn't cover anything.

I've had some failures, like entering a Swedish harbour with my previous boat ("only" 1.5 tons, but still ...) in gale when the engine stopped working, running out of diesel in a narrow straight when going against the wind (also my previous boat), break-down on the junction connecting the engine to the propeller shaft just when navigating in the harbour, etc. In the aftermath it's always a nice story and good experience when things do go right (and in all the cases above, it did).

It can be really difficult to navigate in such circumstances even when there aren't technical problems. I have been loosing control several times just to recover with millimeters in margins.

When things go right, but with razor-sharp margins, everyone is happy and may even laud the captain's skills. When things go wrong the same people will be really upset.

shit a was not thinking it was the wires or it had wires. at all. a remember one time a was in hafjell on my downhill bike and lost my front brake not the best day can we say or dont hurt..the boot life is fascinating
a have canoe paddles quite a lot. is not the same but it and being on the water is incredible. me and 2 friends went down sørkdaleslva in the darkness a few years back is was so nice a recommend it if.
ye a can understand it concept of living on a boat

Broken break wires on the bike, as well as frozen breaking wires, or going downhill on summer tires on ice ... yeah, I do have quite some horror stories on that as well. In Tromsø we had a steep downhill to get either downtown or to the school, today in Oslo we have a steep downhill to get home from school or the transport, it's amazing I haven't had any real bad accident.

My last accident was here in Oslo, I always used both breaks down the downhill, and I didn't notice until it was too late that the breaks had become too worn out, so one day the bike was just accelerating down the hill despite me breaking as hard as I could. I couldn't make the turn and was flying right into our local forest, my son laughing hard of me.

Yes, we are frequently sleeping in the boat, but since I have a family and children going to schools/kinder garden, I live in a house. I would probably have moved to the boat if it wasn't for the children.
